Howdy all,
A friend and I want to plan an ice fishing trip for walleye and don't know where to start. We have all the gear but have just been focusing on panfish for the last couple years. We aren't interested in fishing 'the river', as we are a little skeered of that.
Any pointers would be appreciated. I've been told that some of the inner bays of western Erie are good (North Maumee etc.). Also wondered about Saginaw bay and LSC. I have a 2 person trap and my friend has an ATV.
Thanks again for any help,
AJ

Little Bay de Noc is always a safe bet. Check out www.sallmarresort.com and go to their fishing reports page. That will give you an up to date report on what's been happening up there lately.
Hotels are very affordable up there this time of your too.

My vote is Saginaw Bay. I dont think its ready yet. Maybe 2 weeks of nice cold weather.
Saginaw Bay can be hit or miss, but I rarely get completely skunked.
The Bay maybe isnt what it used to be, but it is some good action.
Scout the bay and talk to locals.

Brent, Thats kinda what I was thinking; but Saginaw Bay is somewhat imposing. I've fished it from a boat, but I can cover a lot of water in a day. It scares me to venture out on such a big expanse of ice and knowing that there is a LOT of unproductive ice out there. Its tough enough when you are trolling around looking for the fish. I guess it just takes some good scouting/phone work to narrow it down some. A good chart and GPS is probably necessary as well.
Thanks,
AJ

I don't think there is as much unproductive ice as you are thinking. I've caught fish out there in water from 4'-24'. For me the key has been don't just go and plop down in a spot for the day unless you are into fish. Continue moving and you'll get into fish. I won't spend more than 30mins. in a spot without marking or seeing fish.

Where is the best place to park and start from? When I fish it in the summer, I'll either go from Sebewaing or Linwood.
