Finally starting to get some folks onto Simcoe for some Jumbo Perch and the action has been awesome so far with lots of fish in the 10-12" sizes being caught. The slush from the warmer temps the past couple of days is starting to firm up and we still have some good ice at Virginia beach and Cook's bay area's.

We have also been doing well for Laker's, Rainbow and Splake on some of the northern inland lakes.... here is a beauti taken a couple of days ago. http://profishntanglingservices.com/MyPictures/000_0661-50.jpg

Take care everyone.... be safe and Happy New Year!;)

3 of us returned from Simcoe yesterday. Drove up early Monday but didn't get on the ice until 9:00 AM. Slushy and windy. According to guys that were out earlier they did well from daylight until we got there. We started at the little marina on Lake Dr. N. (Cook's Bay, Keswick) and started drilling in 18 FOW. Used Rapala's # 3 in Rainbow and FireTiger patterns. Caught 3, 8" fish. Moved all over, as far out as 34 FOW. finally after 4:00PM we started catching fish. Got 22 9'' to 11" before dark. Tuesday on the Lake at 7:15 AM. I switched to a large flutter spoon which I doctored up with holographic tape and a red soft anise bead. First drop I hooked a nice 10" fish and followed up with 6 or 7 more in the next 10 minutes. Then they quit. My Bro-in-law also changed to a spoon (Ken's Bead and pulled about 30 fish but almost half were only 7 1/2" to 8". We all were moving around generally in the 20- 22 FOW range. We had to quit at 11:00 Am in order to check out at the motel, and we ended up with 116 fish for the day. Only 33 were 9" or larger. The ice is only 7 - 8 " and the main lake is open water. 2 guys were on snowmobiles but I didn't see any ATV's yet. Generally speaking the 625 mile round trip, overnight lodging and gas at 85-92 cents/liter I could have done just as well on LSC for a whole lot less time and money. The weather forecast for there is rain Wednesday and Thursday. I wouldn't go this weekend unless you don't mind tip toeing around on slushy honeycombed ice.

Sounds like you were not in the right area. Better luck next time.

If anyone was planning on heading up the next few days expect some slush on the ice. It has been warm the past couple of days and rained nearly all day today. The big perch grounds between Georgina and Thorah and off Beaverton are not safe yet.... we need a cold spell again. Cook's Bay still has some good ice but suggest staying in the bottom half of the bay as the N. end has open water.

Take care and be safe out there.......Greg.

I keep reading about how a Simcoe trip is not cheap. I think that depends on how you look at it. If I take my boat to Lake Michigan it is $180. in fuel to get it there and back, $180.00 for two nights motel, $200.00 fuel for the boat, $100.00 for food & misc. It usually cost me between $500.00 and $700.00 for the weekend. If I go to Simcoe, $100.00 in fuel to get my machine and hut there and back, $100.00 two night motel, $10.00 gas for Quad, $100.00 food and misc. Simcoe trip cost me between $300.00 and $400.00 (Canadian funds) a weekend. I have just as much fun icefishing Simcoe as I do Trolling for Kings, so from my point of view Simcoe is a lot cheaper.

It also helps to go with a group.
Here is what my costs were last trip.
1/4 of diesel 50
Dinner, and board at Caseys 33.85 plus 10 for a tip
Gas for my sled 17
I also bought my 06 license 63.50
For a grand total of 111 plus 63.50
It helps that we have a 4 place trailer, and a 70 gallon reserve tank on the truck. That is still a cheap trip in my book.

I go for the good time with family and friends and the possibility of catching some fat yellowbellies.

If all I cared about was saving time and money I would go to Meijer and save all the hassle.

Hey guys. I am going up to Simcoe Jan 19-21.

I am taking a total of 6 guys. With hut rental and motel and gas it is around $184 per guy. That is sleeping 3 nights. I think it is a good deal.

What is the cost of a CA three day fishing license???

Thanks and tight lines, I am ready for Anchor Bay....

I would boycott anything to do with Ontario until they stop shipping all their trash here. The cocky Ontario Bureacrats have threatened an all out trade war if Michigan stops accepting the trash. Simcoe is tempting I know, but think out your own home base. We are all sportsman and take pride in conservation, etc...Stay out of Ontario.

Apples for apples....dude

Not sure what you mean by this. I guess what it boils down to, are you willing to get off your wallet for a fishing trip. I fish all over Michigan, Canada, Salt water, on our vacations to Mexico and other places, and all the trips cost something.
I'm heading up to Simcoe in the morning. There is ice up there, not much around here.

Right on Inseine. Looks like the big lake is starting to close up. Another week we might be able to get onto some real crazy action.
