Well I received that BSA Over Under for christmas. When I first picked it up, it felt great, shouldering it and such. Took it to the field, and shot some clays, or attempted to. It has the single selective trigger with the barrel selector trigger inside of the safety, so its almost like controlling two buttons. When I shot the top barrel first, it pushed the safety down just enough that it wouldnt shoot the bottom one unless i pushed the safety back up. If I shot the lower barrel first, then it worked sometimes, UNTIL both barrels blasted at the same time. Im fortunate that I have a buddy at the store my girlfriend got it from. Gonna take it back. What is the best Over Under in the 400-450 range? Im thinking about the Spartan by Remington. They have it marked at 469 and he will come down on that price. Let me know what you guys think.

A recent article I read about that spartan gun spoke well of it. The short of the article was that the gun was'nt the prettiest thing, but it was built like a tank. I believe it is built in russia somewhere. My advice would be to return that gun and save the money until you can get the o/u that you want. I own a Red Lable my buddy owns a Citori another has a beretta. They are all great guns, yes they are almost double the cost, but you get what you pay for.

The Spartan is a relabeled Baikal out of Russia. I have only handled a few but those were heavy, had poor fit and finish and at least one mechanical problem. If I were in your shoes I'd look at the used market first and if that didn't work out I'd save up a couple hundred extra bucks and pick up a Verona or Fausti/Traditions. Every once in a while I'll see a lower end Berreta listed for $999. That would be another good choice.

Stoeger Condor is a nice, well balanced gun in that price range. Agree that the Spartan is heavy and seems cheap, would think Remington could have thought that one out better.

just picked up a spartan spr 310 o/u in 28 gauge. True it's finish is not that of a Browning but the gun shoots so damn sweet. Would love to have a high end o/u but family comes first. I need to remember to thank myself for the X-MAS present.

As a general rule of thumb...Cheap guns arn't good and good guns arn't cheap. There are exceptions but they are rare.
I have one of the Baikal 12 ga O/U and wouldn't trade it for most of the high priced O/U's I've shot. It may not be the prettiest gun in the field but it shoots great and has never failed me. I carry it in the truck when I guide at bird preserves and many times I have loaned it to people when their Brownings, Berettas, etc. failed them. A few even went and bought one after shooting it. I have shot most other brands and even own a Franchi Veloche that stays in the safe.

I don't think you could go wrong with the stogoer. I have had one for a while and never had a problem from it
Another vote for the Condor.
But also, start checking the used gun rack at gun shops. You might find a great deal on a used gun.

as far as the spartan o/u.... i liked the feel and shouldering of the 20ga, but the 12 ga seemed unreasonably bulky and ill-handling. just my experience. YMMV

I bought a Verona last year and am more than happy with it.
Gander carried them & beielve still had some left. Made By F.A.I.R. Rizzini.
Beretta Quality for half the price.
I paid $729.00 for it, I think Omega(randy) was looking at one & said they are up to $799.00 now.

Well thanks for the replies fellas. I actaully returned that BSA this morning and bought/exchanged it for the Spartan 12 gauge O/U 28". Took it to the field, didnt wanna stay long with the light rain. It shot flawlessly and the ejectors work great. To pretty much sum it up, like everyone else, not the prettiest thing, but shoots like a charm and seems highly durable. Take care fellas

Take a peek at Mossberg's new O/U Select. They are going for about $500 and seem to be a pretty good gun for the cash.
