Being a first timer with an ATV this year, I'm just wondering what type of safety equipment that everyone carries with them? Like, flares, flat tire kit, etc. I think I pretty much have everything, just lookin' for anyone's input, in case I forgot anything. Thanks in advance.

I always carry some rope. Never know when you or another will need a tow into shore. Also, you can never have too many bungee cords for holding down gear ;) .

Ya, rope was a given, I got plenty of that, but there will be NO BUNGY CORDS on my ATV!!!! LOL. Everything I take out there will be tucked away, nice, neat and tidy in its own little space.

Small compass. gps or not it helps if the batteries go dead when a snow/fog comes in. Also place you cell phone in a zip lock bag. (dry bag) If you go through you'll still be able Phone for help . If you do go through your tires will do a good job keeping your machine floating (upside down) but then the seat get saturated (depending on your weight of the atv) it may sink or become neutral in the water. One member on our site "Shadow" pulls a trailer along with him in the trailer he has two long wood planks. this is handy if a pressure crack forms and you have to drive across or the ramps bet bad when out.

YES!!!LOL, I've done the bungy cord thing in the past, not doing it anymore. Everything on my ATV, will be made by a manufacturer that makes stuff specificly for ATV's and for holding cargo.
I always have my GPS with me Ed,, I have all your "hot-spots" in there, so if you see a couple of yahoo's on a camo Arctic Cat pull up to you and politely ask you to MOVE, so we can fish that spot, don't take offense,LMAO!! That wooden plank idea is great, never thought about that.

WHB - We all put "Slime" in our tires. This stuff is must!

Others have already mentioned the rope thing, as well a compass. I usually take along my GPS, my two way (RFS) radio, a flash light. All run on "AA" batterys so a few extra "AA" batterys go along as well, just in case. ;)
Also, If your gonna be a "real" ATV'er you'll have to break down and get some "Bungies"!
A couple of tiedowns and a ratchet strap as well....

Unless we get some cold weather you may want to add a couple of pontoons one for each side before you go out.

I believe Michigan Law requires at least 5 bungees, each of varying lengths and colors on each rack of an ATV.
If the law doesn't require it, it should.
Oh....and I think one is supposed to broken and another one must be hooked on one end and dragging behind the machine.

If your using an atv in the extreme cold cary a extra spark plug and wrench. Also know how to change it, I have seen so many quads immobilized by a fouled plug that I dont leave home with out an extra. After last year on -12 day when we couldnt get three new quads started, if we have real cold weather we take an atv coveer or a good sized blue tarp. Last year we found out if we made a tent out of our portable shanties and put our heaters inside for a 1/2 hr we could start new yamahas. Dealers claim epa regulations have caused quads to become less cold tolerant, Most quads that wont quite fire will start up if you pull the seat and air cleaner and hand choke them, try this before the battery is dead and the plug is fouled.

do not fear the bungee,.........in fact,............. Love the Bungee !!!
Well my quad is equipped pretty much like my drift boat in terms of safety equipment:
1. Line (50')
2. GPS
3. Cell Phone
4. backpack stove/2 spare fuel canisters
5. a couple of MRE's
6. Compass
7. GI Shovel
8. 4 bottles of water (most of the time they don't freeze)
9. 3 extra spark plugs for the quad/3 extra plugs for the auger
10. Space blanket
11. Spare hat and gloves
12. State required bungee cords
13. 1 gallon plastic can of unleaded
14. 1 gallon plastic can of pre-mix unleaded
15. Tire plugging kit
16. 12v compressor
17. Personnal Strobe/spare batteries
18. 2 spare canisters for Mr. Heater
19. Onin Flare gun with 5 red flares
20. 3 hand held flares
21. First Aid kit.
This all fits into my rear rack pack and you would never know I was carrying it unless you looked. It may seem extreme, but experience is a great teacher.

I pull a small trailer and modified 2 of Cabela's aluminum ramps to use as removable sides on the trailer. they keep gear and people in and if I come to a pressure crack just pull them off and lay them down. Can also be used to put the ATV in the back of my truck when the cap is off in the summer. I carry a 20' nylon tow rope, the kind with hooks attached. It fits in my fender bag and they are fairly inexpensive at Murray's, Auto Zone etc. Spark plugs, and tire repair are a must. The way the ice is I'm thinking of a self deploying marker buoy so the salvage vessel can find it!
