Hi guys,
I am looking into getting a small single person shanty. I was at Cabelas today and they had the Clam Fish Trap Scout for I think $239. I sat in it and I liked it and seemed to be well built with some thicker material for the covering. I liked the velcro vents too. Later on I went to Dunhams and they had a Frabill 6080 ultra lite in the box(so I couldn't sit in it) for $149. From the pictures it looked to be of similar design but the material didn't look as thick. Any opinions? I am planning on buying one of the two in about 2 weeks when I get back into town. This is going to be my first full season of ice fishing and I have everything else I need I think. Thanks in advance!

I have both. The ultralite and the single. The ultra works great for small lakes but it is small inside. I do prefer to use the single most of the time for the extra room that it has.

Cabela's also has the HT brand one-man shelter that has 500 dernier matarial. I got one for Christmas and the material is THICK!! I also looked at the Frabill, but chose the HT Escape Expreess instead. It also comes with a folding tripod chair and a travel/storage cover. I've got photos in the link in my signature below.

How much did that HT cost and how is it?

Go with a fishtrap pro. I wouldn't trade mine for anything else out there when I'm fishing by myself.

Cabela's had it for $199.99. But I got the shelter and the Cabela's rod case for $208.31 including shipping. I ordered it on a Thursday and it arrived the following Monday. don't just buy it online. Call in the order because you can ask Cabela's if they are running any specials. You won't get deals if you don't ask. Cabela's was running a deal where if you spend more than $200 you get $25 off. At $199.99 I was a penny short so I bought the rod case, which was also $5.00 off at $19.99.
$199.99 (Shelter)
+$24.99 (Rod Case)
$224.98
+$20.00 (Shipping)
$244.98 (Total)
I saved about $36.67 ( $244.98-$208.31=$36.67 )
I've only been able to use it once because of the weather. But I was suprised at how well it was built and how thick the 500 dernier canvas was. I was really inpressed with it after comparing it to a Frabill ultra-lite that I saw at Farm & Fleet. The Ultra-lite material is only 210 dernier. The HT also has four windows with flaps to shut out the light. For the extra $50 the HT cost over the Frabil Ultra-lite, I am definately glad I made the HT choice.
Here is a comparison sheet I made when I did my search.

I sat in the pro, it next to the scout, I think you could almost fit 2 people in there. Sounds like I might be going with the pro for 299. I sure hope I am busy over the next 2 weeks so I can afford it and it better get a lot colder while I am gone so I can use it!

Ouch, jbird. I looked at all the pics,, that thing looks small. One thing I did before I bought my shanty is, I went to Cabela's and a few other stores and sat in the shanties for a while,, I went and got buckets, poles, lantern, chair and a couple empty boxes and crammed it all in the shanty to "simulate" fishin' conditions, I wanted to make sure I had enough room to accomodate all my CRAP. Turns out, the Otter Med. Den I have is a lil' too big for one person, but my Otter Small Den is a perfect one man, only downside is you can't stand up. I sat in a Trap Pro today at Cabela's, I think I'd spend the extra dough and get the Pro.

My old lady works at bass pro shop, so I used her discount of 25% on the supersale and got a frabil ultralite , originally 150$ after her discount I paid 112.50$. For that price I could not go wrong. They are a little thinner, but very nice. I always fish with a tip-up, so I have just enough room for one hole, my lantern, and the 12 pack. It's small, but it heats up fast. Mr. buddy heater is a little to much for it, but it's better to be hot then warm. I have a four man clam also that I bought 2 years ago which I use still, but lately I found myself not wanting to sit in one spot with 3 guys in a shanty, I bring the ultralite, the power auger, and drill 20 or 30 holes and cover alot more of the lake, buying a one man was the best thing I've purchased this year.

I have a Frabill Ultralite for sale if anyone is interested. It's small which is why I just bought a Fish Trap Pro. I only used the Ultralite about 4 or 5 times and I'm selling the cover with it ($30+ new) - $75 if anyone is interested.

Like I'd mentioned to Burksee (it doesn't work out for him) ... I could get the Ultralite to a customer of mine in Ann Arbor if you could pick it up there? Let me know and I'll give you details of where/when.

I just got the Fish trap pro from Gander Mountain for Christmas, it is freakin awesome. Very roomy and a very comfortable seat, plenty of storage. I think it costs 300 bucks, but, it is worth the extra $$.

Thanks for the good deal. Used it last night in a rainstorm/snow, stayed warm and dry, wow what a difference from standing in the elements. I am going to have to invest in some shorter rods though but that is a small price to pay for comfort, and what the hell who doesnt want to buy some new stuff.;) ;)
Cheers!

When you get some new rods try to get a lease one that is limber as a willow. You will think it's to limber and can't get a hook set and can't fell the bite. That would be wrong. " I " think the fish can't feel the rod and take the bate into there mouth a little deeper. I have set mine on a bucket to hole hop other holes and many times I would look back to see the rod bent double and that is when the fish are in a neg mode. The bate would be so deep in there mouth I have to tear it out. Other stiffer rod the fish would hit and spit it out. Under stand that don't happen all the time but the limber rod will put a few more fish in your bucket. I also like to play with my fish and use light line. Good luck how ever you go.

Spring bobber is less than a buck each and you may be able to modify your longer rods with just a spring bobber wrapped and epoxied on the end.....
