I would like to know if there is any fly fishing gents out there that can give me any tips on fly fishign for salmon in the fall on the rivers. What I would like to know is the weight of the tippets I should use and the sinker setup and what flies I should use. I have never done this kind of fly fishing so I would like to get all the info on this I can thanks.

Oh man , you opened a book!!!! and I'll be glad to write it for you. The answers will vary from river to river so I need to which ones you will be hitting(chances are that I have experience on that river or one very similar).

Well I fish all of those except the PM and I will be trying to learn that river a little this fall.
As far as setup on any of these rivers you will be using a chuck and duck rig using spit shot or a slinky(drift sinker).(I'm assuming you have seen this rig before). On the Ausable and Man. you will want to use a considerable amount of weight. I usually start off with 3 or 4 #7 spit shot and go from there. Basically what I will try to do is to get a drift where the weight will hit the bottom every few seconds.
On the smaller rivers like the pm. I use two tiny spit shots most of the time.the weight of the two will be half the weight of a #7 shot.
As far as tippet/leader you will want a 10-12lb maxima leader for the larger rivers and 6-10 for the smaller. I have landed chins on 4lb before but it is like stopping a train with twine. actually I think it is nutz to try them with 6lb but when the fish get spooky it is the only way to get bites.
Indicator fishing fishing is gaining popularity amoung the steelhead crowd because it is more challenging and you foul hook less fish. I will be using this method a lot this year on my smaller tribs.
As far as flies go, you can't go wrong with a glo-bug, egg-sucking leech, sparrow or stonefly nymph!!!!!
THere is so much more to write about salmon fishing that I just don't have time for. Basically salmon fishing is the same as steelheading so if you see any books on the subject you should read them.
Here's the biggest bit of advice on salmon fishing that anyone could give in one sentence: STAY AWAY FROM TIPPY AFTER THE FIRST WEEK IN SEPT.!!!!!!!!

Thank You very much for the info. I will keep all this info in mind and especially the last bit of information about Tippy Dam.

You might want to check out the Michigan Flyfishing Club. It sponsors a fall salmon outing every year. You can learn first hand all the techniques and make some freinds (might even catch some fish!)for minimal $$.Let me know if you are interested and I will forward the info you need to join.
