My wife took my son to school this morning and in the middle of a farmers potatoe field down the road, lay a big bull elk dead (she said it looked like a big 6x6). She said the state troopers where already there and one was speeding up and down the road. She also said, there was no evidence of any glass or car parts in the road so she really didn't think anyone hit it.

Then, after dropping my son off, she stops at the post office to pick the mail up and over hears this lady saying to the postmaster "I have these dam wild turkey's in my yard, eating out of the bird feeder and crapping all over my yard so I have been shooting them and giving them to some friends". The posts master told her that was illegal and her response was " really"?

I'm going to have my wife call the post master later today (when she gets home) and see if he knows where this lady lives so I can forward the info to the DNR.

I guess I know why they call this area "poachers alley"

cody.....do you live in the joburg area east of gaylord by any chance.....It seems like every year right after elk season someone shoots a big bull elk up there just to prove they can do it . I hope they catch them . the reason i asked is i guide on a potatoe farmers land up there during elk season and we had several people shine it real early while we were seting waiting to hunt it ....shooting light isnt until 8 am during elk season so i never went in untl 8 and people would come by shining as early as 630 good thing we were there when they did that i guess...i hope that lady that shoots the turkeys learns a lesson for shooting turkeys to .....have a great day

Yes, excatly, what potato fields do you guide on? Do you live around here?
Your right, my neighbor down the road had a nice bull on his property 2 years ago that someone shot and cut the horns off of. My friend found a nice set of 6x7 sheds behind the potato field off of Gingell, just south of m-32 last spring.

I seen a nice heard alomost down by Old State that had at least 8 cows and one big bull but they seemed to have vanished from this area again. My uncle is a big shed hunter in the Pigeon and has a garage full of sheds from the past 15 years.

Yes, its a small world, I believe its the same farm, Tony Prusakiewics. The Elk was killed on the east side of Gingell and Finnegan.

I hope they get both poachers.

Anyone who's having problems with wild turkeys in Area J can contact the MWTHA, and we'll help them out the best we can, luring the birds to feeders right out of the area, if necessary. A lot of people don't know about us, but even still, all they have to do is call the Gaylord DNR, the folks over there hand out our phone numbers all the time...

Really bugs me when people who live up north can't handle what comes with living up north...

Linda, you wouldnt believe of all the poaching going on by locals, I hear about it all the time. This fall I went to help my son-in-law fix his truck up in the U.P and it was at his firends house in the garage. When I arrived there were 4 younger guys there and they were all talking about how they poach deer. One said he has a walkout basement with a recliner set-up next to the door wall and a bait pile just outside that and he sits there at night and shoots deer off the pile. Clams he shot 5 bucks last year.

Right on Ferg.

Codybear, you are right also about the poaching. We've lived both in the northern LP and in the UP. Here's another hint. One lesson we were "taught" is that you never buy a Christmas tree. Just "pick it out ahead of time, then wade through the snow in December to get it via the midnight discount." When we were first told that we thought it was certainly a joke. Not to be! It was amazing the attitude of some of the locals.....but then I found out later that most of what we thought were locals were actually people who'd moved there. No wonder there are some hard feelings amongst some....

Oh yes, we also have pines where we live now and occasionally we come up missing some around Christmas time. If a family were poor and couldn't buy one, all they'd have to do is ask! What the heck, I'd even get out the atv so they wouldn't have to carry it to the car.

Such is life.

Cant say that I know them but I'm sure my wife probably does. I'm currently looking for a good piece of land in the JoBurg area to build a new home. If I find one and you move up here, I will have a nice cabin right down the road from where you guide for sale.
