I was cleaning a bunch of gills over the weekend and 1 out of every five had little grub worms in the meat kind of looked like a small spike. Kinda grossed me out I'm done eating gills. Anyone else find that and eat em anyway?

If there's only only 1 I pick it out. If there's more I throw it out.

Ya, once you get some batter on 'em and fry 'em up, you can barely tell their in there.

This comes up each and every year here. Somebody last year even posted pictures of the flesh and the worms. Gills from lot's of small ponds and lakes often times have them. And as was said, safe to eat according to all authorities. Just cook them thoroughly ;)

The grubs are actually a species of worm which are a common parasite in many local bodies of water. If you have ever cleaned a fish and seen black specs which look like large black pepper flakes in them that is the worm in its egg stage. They will not hurt you wether fully cooked or not. Humans are not a natural host for these parasites. I myself dont like raw panfish anyhow so I do cook them thoroughly. Regardless dont throw away a good piece of fish for this reason.

They are probably the same thing. but I have cleaned perch with the black dots in them and gills with them in them. I have only found the grubs in gills? I do know in order for this parasite to survive it takes a fish eating bird to ingest a fish with the parasite then, and only then will the larva enter the water and find fish to infest. IE: if you have noticed more black dots than normal, thank the Cormorants. They won't hurt you but I cut out one or two black dots but if the fillet is loaded I toss it. Check out the DNR web site and look under fish/parasite they have a lot of info on this. let me know if you need a link.

This DNR site covers all the black spots, grubs and nasties.

I was camping a couple of years ago in Addison Oaks and caught a bunch of gills with the black dots on them. I put them back because I didnt know what was wrong with them, if anything. Thanks for the heads up Ed!

I've noticed the pepper spots on the perch and gills in the lake in my back yard. The lake is about 180 acres. But I have not seen them on the crappie. I guess crappies aren't prone to this bug, or are they?Martin

thats why I love those deep water HOGS. The dnr line tells you what type of bug like what type of fish. good read

Next time you catch a salmon or lake trout open up thier air sack and the layer of skin next to the spinal colum. Count how many tape worms you can find in there. Talk about nasty. I called the dnr and they told me the same thing about the tape worms, "just cook it long enough and it will be ok". Not me, catch and release baby. Or I just donate the fish to friends.

thats not gross!!!
gross is lifting up the back feathers on your sick pet rooster and finding 75% of his back crawling with maggots...then catching wind of the stench of the rotting flesh and throwing up...then having to kill him
that happened this summer
now when i hear the phrase "maggot infested"....i REALLY understand it
and for you true sickos....no i did not use the maggots for bait

Just be careful If your head starts itching just send the rest of the fish to me. The itching will stop in a couple of days. I will dispose of the fish for you.
