Wizard, Gino's is located on Jefferson between Crocker Blvd. and Metro Parkway. It's a restaurant not a party store though and it's on the water side. Good luck! Don

There were guys far out there yesterday. Not me. the ice there is still a little shaky. Plus today we will have a straight west wind with gust up to 20 mph. Not good . the ice go's out there quite often. in the early and late seasons.

I'm not going out there (Gino's) until I read that Ed was out there. No rides for me if I can help it.
That is true Mike. But Ed will catch all of the fish.

Oh yeah, CO's were out giving trespassing tickets to people going over into the marina. So if you plan on going in the marina you may want to take the long way.

Were you actually south of Beacon's Cove? - straight out from the launch.
Or at Gino's

Kinda sounds like the marina? but there were a few guys way out. (close to open water) or fresh froze. there was a small group closer in also?

Definitely NOT the marina and DEFINITELY not out by the open water. I was the one in the CLAM shanty. It was the only blue shanty out there.

Be real careful in the Ginos vicinity! Me & a buddy headed out from a couple canals north of Ginos yesterday. We hadn't even gotten to the mouth of the canal & my buddys boot went thru. He thought it might be the 2nd level. I put my auger there & touched the bottom. Walked a few paces & stuck my auger on another snowy patch & it went right thru. The ice is crusty & it all looks the same. We didn't have a spud so only fished the canal. Only small perch were caught. 1$ bet on 8" or better went unpaid.

I grew up right near there. You cannot justify if the ice is safe if it's 5" or 15", both situations completely depend on the wind. If the wind is blowing toward shore then it's safe, but if the wind is blowing out DON'T GO OUT.
We usually fish Gino's and it can be awesome, but I've seen pressure cracks come out of nowhere and nearly strand us out there. We got off in the time having to cross a 12" crack. People kept going out as we were going in and later that day people were air lifted off as the whole shelf blew out.
There were some guys from here that nearly lost their lives that day.

My son "crossed the crack" last year and fished with Fried Fillets (I think). I stayed on the "safe" side. The Coast Guard came later by boat and chased them back to the shore-side of the crack. I was not thrilled with his decision to cross that crack but when a man is 32 years old he doesn't have to take his father's advice. Needless to say, I fished right at that crack and was ready to yell if I saw it opening. Two days later I believe the ice was gone.
Somebody here took a ride on that one. Was on TV if I remember correctly.

 :hide:
Yep...March 28 to be exact.
Anytime you cross the pressure crack you're rolling the dice. 1st time in 32 years that I came up with snake eyes!!! Winds were forcast to be 5 to 10 and wound up being 17 to 20mph...That's all it takes. We took every safty precaution that we could ....except a boat. (solved that problem for this year :D ) Man, we caught some nice fish for the previous week out there!!!
I was out there on the day that Ed Macrina got blowen out.... Missed it by about 20 minutes...We were getting some nice fish too, but I knew we had to go cause that front was headed in....
Came close 4 or 5 other times to getting blowen out, (but nothing like Ed went through. :yikes:) both on Saginaw bay and LSC. I was freaked out way more being lost in the fog off linwood than I was drifing around LSC...Real weird feeling watching the shoreline move by!!!! Hope I don't experience that again.
The more time you spend out there the better chance the laws of average are going to kick in.
BTW...IF you ever do need a ride, (and aren't in immediate danger of crossing the shipping channel...)You might want to dial the non emergancy # for the MCSD as oppossed to 911...That is unless you like doing the bucket dance for the media!!!
Becarefull out there and watch those winds!!!!
Yes that is true Mike. I fished with you that day. That is one of the reason's I purchased the Mustang suit, Reading Eds adventure and other threads. Tim

Sorry Skid. I forget now who I was fishing with/near. My mind was on the other side of that crack. Even when they grow up they still make you anxious.
