Hit up the dyke today, got a very late start as we arrived at the fishing grounds at around 3:00. Eveyone knows the walk is long and hard, NO YOU DONT. We were the first people to fish the dyke, that meant hiking four miles threw a foot of snow with 2 foot drifts with no trails. Ice at the dyke is fantasic though 4-6 inches of solid black ice, and the fishing was pretty good considering the conditions were blizzard like with a big wind. we caught 4 keepers 9-11 inchers right off the bat, then our reels and holes froze so we walked back, lol.

Great to hear that it's iced. In which parking lot did you park your vehicle?

Kevin,

Good for you, you got out to the dike........lol. Was the ice good all over? Did you try north or south of the entrance? Did you guys take the northern route? Like the other guy said , sled dogs might be the way to go ;). I love to hit it today but with the 10-20 wind it could be blowing like hell out there :evilsmile .

Excellent on the report! That is pretty good news on the ice. Hoping that Airport Bay gets good enough to fish pretty soon.

Where is the banana dyke?

http://www.michigandnr.com/publications/pdfs/huntingwildlifehabitat/sga/ptmouillee.pdf

It is in the Pointe Mouillee State Game area at the Huron River mouth. Above is the link to the map in the MDNR website. It is the the banana shaped area with dark color. It is tough to get there; you would need to walk 3 or 4 miles on the dyke to get there. However, if the snow is cleared on the dike, you can ride a bike over there. Only authorized motorized vehicles (border patrol vehicles, DNR vehicles, and some goofy construction vehicles inside that area) are allowed to enter.

Summer time, people catch catfish, white bass, and sheephead at the south end of the causeway tubes.
