Man I just got back from an early afternoon rabbit hunt by myself and got my limit within a 1/2 hour.Got to the spot about 1:30,got out of my truck and a rabbit takes off,I dont even have my gun out yet...I knew it was going to be a good day ... There is one spot where a tree fell over and the weeds really grew up around it is so thick I could'nt even get my gun up on at least 3 of the little buggers.Well it was all up hill from there.I was walking slowly and was able to get all 5 while they were still sitting,no running shots at all.I cant wait to get these critters into a stew...yum...yum..:)

I have been sick the last 2-3 weeks and have not had a chance to get out, but that will change Sunday. I have a beagle pup that is a year old now and I can't wait to see how she does this year, last year she slept in my game pouch while we were out. I hope the old dog can teach her what to do, she will run rabbits until she is to tired to even walk back to the truck.

You must have a great spot. I'll be heading out with the beagle tomorrow. Our first trip out this year was not a good one. I need to find a couple of honey holes so I can get the dog on some rabbits. She is still learning.

That is pretty good for a hunt all alone and no dog. I will be heading out this afternoon with my dogs and nephews...looks like it could be a good day. It will be fun no matter how many we get.

Ran five today with my beagles. First time out this year. I could only go for a couple hours but the dogs sure had a great time. I let the first two or three run so the dogs could work them then I took one with my recurve that was circling back and missed one more before I had to leave.

Gotta have a beagle, they have to circle once and then its rabbit hunting. Anything less than that is rabbit shooting...
If there are that many, invite a guy with a beagle and have some fun next time....

Sounds to me like he did have fun!!!!

There was a time when I didn't have my dogs and if I went out and shot a limit of bunnies I was happy as he!!. Now I love just to here my dogs work those cottontails but I still get excited SHOOTING a few as well.
If you want to debate the shooting and hunting thing then I would suggest next time you go rabbit HUNTING you take a sling shot, or it will just be rabbit SHOOTING!!! :bash:

The guy without the dogs is doing more hunting than those of us with dogs are,
he has to beat the brush himself, not have the dogs do all the work for him!!

Congradulations Jacob, any day a man shots a limit of bunnies is a day to be happy about, dogs or not.. :xzicon_sm

Mr. huffman, great story and good job on those rabbits. Crossed my mind yesterday, as we were cleaning the carpets(getting ready for Christmas), looking out the window, as the sun was coming out from behind the clouds. Thought, man those rabbits will be coming out to get warmed up now. Again, good job and enjoy that stew. Brian.

Went out this afternoon with the beagle and only ran 1 rabbit. The beagle is a little rusty, also the deep snow is really wearing her out. I'll be heading out Friday morning. I need to get her on some bunnies. Would'nt mind taking a few as well. We'll see how Friday goes.

Glad to hear rabbit hunting stories. After finally finishing up with all the deer hunting and picking up my two beagle pups from the starting pen a few weeks ago, I'm ready to dive full bore after my favorite animal. Hopefully some of the snow melts and the temperature warms a bit.

Sounds like you guys really got into them.

Let me know if you ever want to try it with dogs. I'll bring the pups out yor way.

Hunting rabbits over dogs is a blast.

What kind of comment is that?? I went three times last year and DIDNT use a beagle and worked my **** off. I got my limit all three times. Having a beagle is not for all and it wasnt JUST SHOOTING!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets turn that around and say get off your butt and push some ground, DONT MAKE A DOG DO ALL THE WORK!! That sounds more like SHOOTING than hunting.

Oh my the way, great job and I hope you have more times out of filling your bag.

I sure hope you weren't using anything bigger than a .410?? That's like shooting fish in a barrel...

BTW - When's the SW MI Rabbit Hunt this year?? ?? ??

Jacob - Nicely done!!!

I feed them all year so I don't have to walk in the brush.

Fact is you can kill alot of rabbit with out a dog. A dog just make it alot more fun.

What ever your doing if your outside having fun then it is a good day.

Actually I was useing my old .16 gauge ithaca. It has a "polly choke" on it. I tightened it down as tight as I could without locking it up of course. It is my favorite if I am still hunting them,if I am jump shooting them it gets opened up to improved cyln. . I also try to use 6 shot when possible.I have run them with dogs before but no longer have any.It is alot more exercise for me if I have to do all the brush stomping myself...

I got my beagles out Sunday, I don't know who was more tired afterwards me or the old girl. The pup ran and ran didn't do anything bad like chase deer and stuck close so I didn't have to chase her, hopefully by the end of the season I will see some improvment.

We got on 5 rabbits early, 2 shots, 1 hit. And as for letting the dogs do all the work both me and the old one were both bleeding after we were done. Bought some new brush pants at Cabelas today.:)
