A friend of mine and I are planning on taking a trip up north in a couple of weeks and combining fishing for warmwater species on Wakely Lake and fishing the Hex hatch (for the first time). Never been to Wakely Lake and was wondering if anyone can steer me in a direction of flies to try? I will also have my spinning gear but prefer to stick with the fly rod. I would love to catch my first Pike on a fly up there. Any effective patterns for pike? Also do you do anything special for a leader so they don't bite through it? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

John

I think you need a permit to fish there. Check with the Fly Factory or Gates they should be able to answer your questions and verify if a permit is required.

Try a huge strip Leech or a madonna in White, chart or similar colors. I'd just use a 20lb maxima tippet.

Got back from 11 days up North. Fished Wakely Lake in the morning on June 29th and 30th. I caught one small pike and my friend caught one small Pike, couple small bass, and a real small bluegill. We tried both flyrods and spinning gear but the wind picked up real early and made it quite difficult to fly fish so we mostly used spinning gear. I expected to get more and bigger fish for a catch and release lake only open from June 15 til the end of August but it was a real nice time anyway. Saw some loons out on the lake.

Yes, a permit is required and can be purchased at the fly factory for $5 for a week or $20 annual. I believe they also sell a daily for a couple of bucks. I am sure the permit can be purchased elsewhere but this is just where we purchased ours.
