some guys have been walking around the south side of the island into the back basin. ice ranges from 21/2 to 5 inches. thinnest is along the south wall. be careful with new snow on the ice. extra weight has water coming up out of the holes. especially yesterday with the onshore wind. have to do alot of weeding to keep some fish. like everywhere else, tha fish are feeding on bluegills.

The feeding on the bluegills are a good sign, that means the baitfish are starting to dwindle on St. Clair.....Last year at any givin time, i could get a ample amount of shinners on the middle channel. I think thats why the bite was slow last winter....

When I fished the beach a few days ago I got a mixture of gill minnows and shiner minnows in the bellies of the perch. Good point Mushy.

I know venetian canal off south river road is loaded with little bluegill. perch always seem higher up when they're feeding on these. always the most food in their guts on first ice. I think that's why the small brown or purple tube jigs work best! especially after they're scruffed up a bit. this new snow on the ice is going to make it pretty dark in deep water. gold jigs have always done the best in these conditions (or white) for me.
