i can pick up a new scientific angler concept model 567 reel with a 9' 6# sircell graphite composit rod with a case for 40 bucks i know its a combo made for a rookie like myself i was just wondering if it was a good deal or not and if a 6# rod and reel was the right weight for trout and panfish any help would be great.

I started out with a 7# as a compromise between steelhead and trout. I was pulling gills straight out of the water when setting the hook. A 5# was a little more sporting but my 3# is a blast for gills, especially the big ones. It is fine for most trout too. Personally, I think a 3/4/5# is better for the species you are targeting but going to a heavier weight may not be bad if you want to cast some small bass bugs as well. The length is probably appropriate for lake/larger river fishing.

i have to agree, the 6 wt is alittle large for gills, but that is what i use (until i can get the 3 or 4 wt that is)

does this combo come with fly line and backing or is it just the rod and reel itself?? doesnt sound like to bad of a deal.

where are you getting it from?? the only reason i ask, is that most rods like this can e a 2 wt rod. by this i mean it could be a 5/6wt, but looking at the model number of the reel, i am guessing it is a 6/7wt. if so the line that you would need would be a 6 wt level line or a 7 wf line to get it to cast decently. i heard this from anther fly fisherman. if you are getting it from a fly shop then i would not worry about it too much, they will set you up correctly.

but hey still sounds like a deal to me.

Make sure you get decent line. The level floating line that comes with most sets will turn anyone off fly fishing.
