Anyone hear what plans Cabela's has for West MI., or when they plan to announce whether a store is going to be placed there?

I only ask because a guy behind the gun counter at Cabela's said that plans were cancelled. I asked why, and his response was that Cabela's did not like "Michigan people" because of the heavy union membership. His explanation doesn't make sense as Dundee is in a stronger union area than a store in West Michigan would be. I don't give his statement a whole lot of thought - he had a hard enough time understanding how to do his own job without ticking off his coworkers.

The rumor has it that the Reed City airport (abandoned) is in negoation with the orgaization. I believe they had an article in the local paper about it too. They (rumor) will employ about 100 people and will sprout off resturants and motels, etc. This is considered the crossroad to the NW Michigan tourism area. Remember this is only rumor.

The MI economy has something to do with it I presume. The Dundee store is the only one in the chain that has had layoffs lately. They dont build stores to make us happy, they build them to make a profit. Seeing stories like GM laying off folks may make them a little nervous. Other parts of the country are exploding with economical benefit. Cabelas is a store that a persons spends their disposable income. No job, no disposable income. Look at MI's unemployment rate compared to the rest of the country. Its just a sound business decision not to come to MI right now. The union thing is also a worry to them IMO.

I'm making the switch over to the Gander Mountain credit card anyway. . .5% back on Gander purchases as opposed to 2% back on Cabela's. . .and I spend a heck of a lot more at Gander anyway.

I just got a Gander card. It is a good deal. I've got over 100000 points on a Sony card and I really don't need any more electronics. Guns - you can always use more :) . My only problem with it is that you can't buy from Gander online. I buy just about everything online.

With Gander about 5 minutes away, I usually find myself there not with anything in mind to buy, but I usually find something I "need".

About a month ago, I read in the local paper (I think it was the Grand Rapids Press) that Cabelas was interested in a piece of property located in Walker, just off I-196, not too far from the Meijers headquarters. However, there were some of issues regarding zoning in the area, and talks were ongoing at the time of the article.

I heard the same thing, but talks must have cooled off. I think it would be a good idea

My uncle is in Sidney NE and does the marketing of the catalogs for Cabelas he said there is no way they will be in Reed City and that is a false rumor. He did say west michigan somewhere is possible in the future but no plans as of where they want to be yet.

I have heard several locations mentioned. They must be searching because the wide variety of people that know about it. I have heard south of Holland, Muskegon and Grandville. I find it interesting that someone else mentioned south of Holland. All rumor until there is a sign or press gets ahold of it.
