Step-son is going on 9 and I am looking to get him a bow so we can both shoot (I have a PSE Firestorm) at our place up north. His track record for sticking to something is not that great, so I don't want to bite too much off in case it becomes another wasted attempt. I've seen the PSE Nova and the Golden Eagle Brave for $30-$40 range, but would be able to go a little higher if someone has a better one their kid has grown out of. He is right handed (but may be left eye dominant -- something we will tackle further as time goes on).
Any advice?
Rick

I bought my 7 year old a Martin Tiger. This bow has 10 inches of draw adjustment, and 20+ lbs of weight adjustment. The only thing the bow is missing is a bigger arrow window. Fletching clearance is very close, and center shot cannot be perfect. Other than that, arrows fly well for him!
I bought the bow used for about $150.00. Take your kid to a local club that has a JOAD program. My son loves shooting for 2 hours on Saturday for $2!!! And that includes coaching!

I am in the same situation. I have looked in a few places. It seems like everything that we looked at was to much or a seemed like a toy instead. The one we are looking at is the Martin Tiger, but I am not sure about adjustments(draw lenght and poundage), if any. Maybe someone could answer that? The thing that is really tough about my stepson is that he is real small for his age and I am afraid that he is going to get a growth spurt and out grow it in 3 months. So I am open for suggestions as well.

I bought my son the mathews Genesis last year so he could shoot 3d with me. Has worked out great, so far. No problem sticking in the target, and no need for draw adjustment. In fact, I can shoot the darn thing. His enthusiasm for shooting with me jumped exponentially.

My son's Martin is currently at 18" draw, and 12# draw. The bow has changable modules for draw up to 28 inches, and the bow will max out at 40-45 lbs. This bow will fit any kid. I do recommend it for those that are not looking to buy new bows everytime your kid outgrows a pair of jeans.
No 4,
I see you are in SE Mi. I take my son to Wastenaw club Sat mornings at 10 am. They have bows, arrows, etc for kids to use. Cost is $2.00. You could bring your son and let him try the Tiger also.

The Genesis whis is design by Mathews but was onrignally distributed by trueflight. Is problem the best bow on the market for young or new shooters it really does not cost alot of money $70-$100 it comes all set up you can even get the whole package which includes arrows, arm guard and hip quiver. You do not have to worry about draw length or let-off because there is zero let-off and any body can shoot it from 10" draw to a 30" draw it peaks out at 20Ibs. which is great for first time shooters. At the WWOW event at the Washtenaw Sportsmens Club the ladies really seam to like them since they are the first bow that is picked.
Hope this Helps,
