Steely help

I am new the the winter ice fishing for steelies. I have fished for pan fish all my life and my brother in law got me into going up to Pentwater here in a couple weeks. I am buying a couple slammers but I still have a couple questions. Please help out a another fisherman.

What size rod do you use for the slammers?
Line?
When do they start fishing them on Pentwater lake?
