Ok guys I need some ideas. The wife and I rent a cabin or take a weekly fishing vacation every year usually late May. I have been to Houghton a few times and really liked it but when they killed the weeds the next year I couldnt catch anything but hammer handle pike. So I would like some recommondations I have a 17 foot targa so I can fish big lakes small lakes whatever. I like fishing walleye, bluegill, specs generally. So any ideas would be great thanks Hux

Silver Lake by Pentwater would be a great choice as well. Lots of other fun stuff like dune rides, beautiful beaches, and a tourist trap town to shop and putz around. My family camped there last summer and loved it.

The fishing is great there for bass, gills, and especially walleye. There is a lot of jet skiiers and pleasure seekers so the early mornings are quietest. I have been told the walleyes will bite with all ofthe activity though too. Crawler harnesses work well.
I did not take my boat as I had the wife and kids and would have only had 5 minutes fishing time anyway.:lol: You can do a search on the site or post a question on the lake and get some great info on how and where to fish it.

If you like crowds it's not a bad lake. The ramp sucks though... watch out for the rocks you can't see!
It is a nice lake if you want to beach your boat and hang out...
But it's not really "up north" in my opinion...

We had a great time and the owners are great people.. Also the price is very reasonable. Hope this helps

Just north of Alpena, in Presque Isle...
Grand Lake and Long Lake, both have plenty of lake front "rentals", both have great fisheries and both are not all that "busy". Lots of great places to eat to!
Here's a few links for information;

yes! keep us informed HUX, my wife and I have sampled 3 dozen places in the last decade and honestly do not have a favorite or a lake that consistently produces 'numbers' and 'size' of fish. Ya might want to research Drummond island while you are looking, and i'm sure Banditto has a great knowledge of this area.

I have property on Grand Lake on Black Bass Bay. I haven't had much luck fishing Grand Lake, but that may be because I :gaga: at fishing :sad: . Once I got a bunch of really nice blue gills fishing my neighbor's lagoon, and once I got 2 baby walleye. But that's been about it.
The Hideaway, Parkerhouse, Kelly's are all good places to eat, and Black Bear Cafe up in Rogers City has one of my favorite breakfasts.

Our place is near the south side of Grand Lake, west side of US-23, where Warren Creek runs under 23. We're gonna have to get you out on the water! Do you do any icefishing up there? Grand Lake's OK, we get a few walleye and some perch, if you like small mouth's and "more" perch then Long's the way to go. ;) I've fished Black Bass Bay, this time of the year the perch fishing can be quite productive! Later on you'll wanna move to the south end, by Whiskey Point or Meztlers Bay. ;)
Thanks for the tip on the Black Bear, we ususally dont get much further north once we're there. Dont know if you heard or knew but the Hide-A-Way's got a new owner, Vern passed away earlier this year and it was sold. Guy's name is John, he's gotta couple of others in Alpena. Fireside Inn is a pretty nice place. The Portage out by the harbor/light house is pretty good. In town (Alpena) the Lamplighter is also a great place. Can't beat Kurvans or Mancino's for a carry out pizza! ;)

You can't beat early ice on black bass bay! I try to hit that a few times a year. LOTS of perch!!!

As far as renting a cabin in the spring...Fletchers floodwaters (near Hillman) is always a lot of fun. Lots of nice sized pike, bass and bluegill. Check out www.jackslanding.com (http://www.jackslanding.com/) for cabin info. Cabins are nice clean places out in the middle of nowhere.

Hamlin Lake has good fishing, can also tow over to Ludington for big lake fishing. Ludington has everything for the family as well. The Lake Michigan beaches are great. Silver Lake has alot to do and is very pretty area. If you want to go a bit further, St. Mary's River is awsome. Great fishing for many species, and much to do from beaches, casinos, shopping to the locks tour. And you can hit Macinaw Island. North of Marquette is Lake Independance. Great perch, smallmouth bass, and huge pike. Minutes from Lake Superior beaches. It is a quiet area with not a whole lot to do other than get back to nature. You can also head into the woods and catch trout in the Yellow Dog River. May also see moose in the area. Planning the vacation and the antisipation leading up to it is great too. Have fun.

I have to Second Van Etten Lake. I have been there a few times over the years. Stayed at Cippewa landing. Nice place. Tons of perch, smallies and Walleyes. MAke sure you get a good map, though. Lots of shallow points that extend pretty far out into the lake....hint hint. Also pay special attention to the grass island and the tributaries.
