Grayling/Higgins Lake Area

Hi there will be up in the grayling area over this comming weekend and was just wondering what the ice conditions are on some of the lakes in this region. I am looking for some small local lake that I can hopefully ventue onto to give a try at some gills any suggestions? Might do a little surf fishing if Higgins is still wide open. Anyone been by the lake recentyl? Is there any shelf ice?

I walked down to the lake at 5 this morning, and it looks like the ice on the East side of the North basin is out to the dropoff. Not strong enough to venture out onto, but too far out to surf fish... You'd best think about one of the shallow lakes in the area for gills. I haven't checked any out, so can't help there.
