I checked it out last night and the ice was still too thin and broke as I stood on it. Very few walleye and keeper pike in that lake. I see you're from Dewitt, you would have better luck for walleye on Duck Lake down by Springport than on Lake Nepessing.

This lake has never been productive for me in the winter

Every weekend it's a different group of people showing up to fish it. By the end of the day they swear they're never coming back.

I wouldn't go there unless you have time to spare. Small gills, small perch some nice bass and a lot of small pike.

Slowpoke is right, the lake is full of tiny gills and perch with hammer handle pike thrown in. The boat launch parking lot is small and fills up quickly on the weekends too. Not really worth the time to drive any great distance to fish it.

Tried fishing in during daylight hours a few times and didn't do squat!! To many recreational activities going on (quads, sleds & cars) during the day. Don't even think about it on the weekend.

Been fishing it the last couple years after dark for crappie and have done "ok". Nothing to write home about. Sometime we catch some very nice ones, other nights we just drink beer and watch the bobbers float. It's close, convenient and a place to go during the week. You may even catch a fish or two. (I need to get a VEX).

We've caught some sub-legal walleye, biggest was about 11".

Good luck and be SAFE!!

sounds like I might have talked to you out there last year or 2 years ago steve....the nighttime/beer thing made me remember :)

It's nice to see that people have found out what a waste of water that place is. I have wasted more hours than I care to admit fishing that place. We had my underwater camera out there about 3 years ago and couldn't find anything but 4-5 inch perch. When I was younger I'd always fall for the pics of fish at the local bait shop. My search for a tiger muskie or walleye landed a big zero. Save your gas money.

Its home to the infamous "Lake Nepessing Jumbo's". That would be a 3-4inch perch. We all joke about it. If we ever go somewhere and catch only small fish,we always call them "Nepessing Jumbo's".

About 10 years ago I caught 2 of the biggest bass I have ever taken. That is after about 50 outtings on the Lake. That lake is a big loser, what ever you do don't read anything about the lake from Tom Huggler. You would think there are 50in musky and State record sunfish all over the place.

I agree with what someone else said, I gaurantee this WILL be the first one you get skunked on wallies. Not to question your walleye skill or anything.

I wouldn't drive across the street to fish it.

Boy, you guys sound exciting lol. May be last ice or something, i dont know but its no fun living around lansing and not having a good walleye lake to fish, theirs lakes by Ionia, and duck lake south of me. Looks like its another trip north to get good walleye water. tight lines all......

Cass Lake in Oakland County has decent numbers of nice walleye. I'd give it some time before I ventured out there, it's a DEEP lake with lots of shallow sand bars that pop up all over the lake.

I live 2 miles from the lake and won't fish it in the winter. The best thing about Nepessing is the Lake Inn. Great food and cheap beer.

Personally, I like fishing that lake for some reason. We pick up some nice gills and crappie once in awhile but you have to work for them, and some big bass too. We also pick up a few pike fishing on the opposite end of the lake away from the crowds and snowmobiles. Also the walleye fishing sucks, never seen one caught before.

Thats because those fish somehow seem to survive feeding once every three months, even in the summer.LOL
Loads of those orange walleye in Halloway too.;)

Paul, I heard when Nags hits holloway the fish just hold up a whte flag and jump in the net. (or out of the hole, apparently) :)

Holloway eyes,

My buddies slay the wallies in the summer with crawler harnesses and bottom bouncers. They use different types of spinners than the harneses come with. I'm not sure what kind though. I haven't seen anybody fishing it in the winter.

There's a pretty good reason that poeple don't fish Holloway in the winter. It just as bad if not worse than Nepessing.

There are a few people that get on top of biting fish but it seems to be few and far between.

My grandma lives right down the street from Nep, were there Sunday for a xmas party, drove by the launch, no-one on the lake, not even any tracks out from the launch. Must not be any safe ice yet. My cousin has fished it before and said lots of weeds and a few bass.

I do live across the street (down the road from it ) and have fished it 4 times. That lake SUCKS!!! So many frickin weed in it if you were to swim in it in the summer time you would drown!
