Most of Upper Hamlin Lake iced over this past weekend with just a small patch of open water at the narrows. I didn't get a chance to check out the lower lake, but will post that report a.s.a.p.

Most local lakes are fishable
The only spot that you may want to wait on is PM river mouth

Saw two guys off of Goodrich Park (Whitehall Municipal Marina) this afternoon with two Slammer Tip-Ups set up in the "current" and they were sitting in a portable off of the docks (jigging for perch??) - one guy came out of the shanty and popped a couple holes with his power auger - he didn't look like he was too worried about thickness.
Other areas of the lake looked "iffy" and didn't see anyone else on the lake.

This evening Lake Ovid (Sleepy Hollow) had, what looked like, a few large open holes still out deep. There's snow on the ice closer to Price Rd. The flooding south of Price Rd. looks to be frozen. I might have to go test it this weekend if the temps stay low.

Sessions Lake in Ionia County might be fishable, took a few steps out and it held. The whole lake was froze over. Didn't see any signs of anyone else had been on the ice though. Might check back Saturday or sometime next week for updated report.

Reeds Lake is covered, but nobody fishing. Shouldn't be long now...Flag Up!
My 5 year old son is still talking about the pike we lost last year in front of Roses.

Just got back from Hamlin Lk and it is NOT SAFE. I watched a guy fall through in waist deep water. There were tracks from people that had been out yesterday, but it is not safe today. 1" snow ice then 1" of water and 1" of good hard ice. It still needs a few days, maybe a week.

Checked Grass Lake, Jackson County. There was around 6" of good ice right off the launch. There was one shanty on the ice all the way on the north side of the lake.
Big Olcott Lake, Jackson County, Michigan Center chain of lakes. Around 4" of hard ice. Water was gushing up when the hole was cut. All in all I would say the Jackson County area lakes are sealed up and ready to fish but that is only my opinion and how I would fish it.
I'll be fishing Pink Street tomorrow between Wamplers and Vineyard. I'll be out there around 1-2pm. I'll be driving a white extened cab silverado with white rims. You can't miss it. Just ask for Reddhead.

Hess had no one on it at all and the back bay of Brooks was fishable with maybe 3" of ice. Not much going on though, with 3 bass, 3 blues and a speck caught.

DTSTrout - Did you drivedown to the bay on the north west side? Or were you just looking from the launch??
Thanks,

Reeds has been completely covered for about a week now and I punched a couple holes around 50' out and had 4" of ice. (Probably 3" of good and 1" or so of honeycomb) I didn't venture out any farther, as it looked a little shady, but it really shouldn't be long before she's safe all over!

Brooks Lake by Newago has 3 to 4 inches of decent ice with a coating of snow/slush. It's safe now, but it won't take much warmth to make it dangerous.

I was by Minor today and to the right of the landing there was 4 to 5 inches of ice but straight out and to the left of the landing it looked like you may want to have water wings. I was there around 11 o clock and they were caughting a few smaller ones. They have been fishing most of the lakes South of Allegan but not getting out to far and some of the ice looks bad. Most of the lakes I went by had about an inch of snow and in some places an inch or so of slush over soft ice.

Hey Guys -
I'm coming up from North East Illinois this weekend for Christmas - I'd like to get out and throw a couple of tip ups in. I'll be in the Holland / Grand Rapids area from the 24th - the 29th.
Can anyone direct me to a decent lake that has 4-5 inches on it where I can catch some Northern or some Walleye?
I was up in Wisconsin about 10 days ago and we slayed the Northern up there - caught 40 Northern with 4 guys in about 8 hours time. We were on 6-7 inches of ice up there. I think the big lake must really cool off the air before it gets to Michigan - it has been real cold here around Chicago too.
Thanks in advance.
-Joe

Any warm up on the west side is a blessing, we won't lose much ice. Melt some snow and then it's supposed to get pretty cold early this next week.
Reed has about 5 inches with about 3 of that good blue ice. :)

Juno/Eagle Channels still good after rain, actually helped getting the snow off.
smaller lakes in edwardsburg Vandalia area are fishable but PFD necessary for hidden spring areas. Shavehead almost 100% open water, Donnell still open water. Havent heard on condition of Diamond, Stone has had fisherman every time I have been past but I have not been out there yet. :coco:

Reeds had a guy fall through on Monday, and he came back for more :dizzy: . I fished, 2 inches of good ice and 3 inches of crap, I wouldn't consider it safe at this point because there are some serious soft spots.

Does anyone know if Blue Lake in muskegon has fishable ice? Or any other lakes in the area. I'm itching to get out.
Thanks,
