About fifteen years ago I seen an episode of Babe Winkleman where he used underwater cameras to view the reaction if fish, gills and specks, while a hole was being made above. The results were that spuds scattered fish, which did not return quickly. A hand auger, by far, had the least impact. The fish moved casually away short distances and began to return within minutes. Power augers were somewhere in the middle. The fish fled quickly, but not as far as the spud, and returned in a short time.
There was a reply in the 'Unwritten Rules' thread that made me consider posting this information. The reply talked about asking a neighbor to borrow a auger instead of spudding near someone else. I would recomend offering your auger if you see someone with a spud:p .
Personally, I very seldom ever see someone with a spud. But, I have had the misfortune of a power auger maniac going overboard, too close for comfort:rant: .

I always use a speedy spud till ice is around 4 or more inches....like to throw it out in front of me while walking....I've seen too many times people just walking out with the auger thrown over there shoulder never checking ice thickness

Not lending my auger to just anybody that I'm not sure will treat it with respect.

I spud holes and immediately catch fish all the time every year.

I have spudded a hole in 6fow, dropped in a tip up and had a 8lb walleye nail it before i could even turn around and walk to my other hole.

I have sat fishin pre-drilled holes catching nothing hundreds of times, only to walk a few yards away, spud a hole and immediately start catching fish.

You think what you want, but I have no problem catching fish after I spud a hole, someone else using one doesn't offend me any.

There's only one bad thing about spuds and that is thick ice.

On first ice, if I have questions safety, I use my spud. Usually only once or twice a year. I keep it knife-sharp and when the ice is thin enough to check, I can cut a hole with about six whacks. and will keep my distance, if anyone else is out. If there is thicker ice and I see someone with a spud, I will either lend my auger, or I will cut some holes myself, if I am not sure about the guy. Figure I am doing everyone (myself included) a favor.

Nothing beats a spud for checking first ice. After that get your self an auger it's quicker and quiteter.
