Im considering applying for a license to spear sturgeon on Black lake. Anyone
been drawn and had a chance to spear??? I have a 6' x 8' shanty. The
wall is 6 1/2' tall the low side and 7 1/2' on the high side. Is this
tall enough to accomodate a spear for sturgeon???

Any "special" needs i should be aware of to go for sturgeon???

A really good friend of mine has a place on Black. His family has owned it since the 20's I believe and they have been going up for Shivaree for many, many years. FYI Shivaree is the Sturgeon festival for those who didn't know. I will see him tonight at bowling and I'll find out what I can and post in the morning, Sun.
Black Lake is awesome for ice fishing, we go up with a pretty big group at least once a year and fish for 3 or 4 days. Correction, about 6 of us fish and 30 of so sit in the cabins playing cards, etc.... :) They were catching some extremely big muskie through the ice last year.
I do know that my friend visits a website from a bar on Black called "The Bluffs". Apparetnly the owner posts daily trail reports, ice conditions, etc.., you might try a search on that. I would bet there is probably some info on Shivaree on the site.

I have read where people will drill a hole in the top of the shanty to accomodate the length of the spear. Then hook up a holding device for the spear so they don't have to hold it by hand all day and night. Then have a small rope to trip the release when needed.

If you want to go you better put your name in and get ready. Some years the season only last 1/2 hour. I dont think you need a long spear it's tied to a rope that you pull the fish in with. I talked to a guy in Cheboygen that had done it and he told me he was fishing in 20 fow, that would take a really long spear if you planned to hang on to it.

My Brother Got the last fish in the lottery last year....22' of water, I think about a 20# spear, I think it was 72 inches long and 68 pounds....I do know it is alot nicer for people that live downstate like us because now they will call you the day before, and you go up and sit the next day....Before you had to go to the Black Lake motel and see if ya got drawn ....website is The Bluffs Resort.com...I believe..........Good luck
