View Full Version : Shanty question
Im thinking about picking up a portable shanty this season. What are the pros and cons between the flip over and traditional designs?
Thanks!

Ditto that. Setup and teardown is much easier with a flip style

the only downside to a flipover is that they don't have a full floor and don't seal up quite as well as the standards.... but the benefits of easy build up and tear down, along with storage and transporting far outweigh that.

With a portable shanty it's a lot easier to move from spot to spot to find active fish when the bite is slow. You'll end up catching fish on days when guys aren't getting anything. They will sit over an unproductive all day because it's harder to move a traditional shanty.

One of the biggest "pro's" to the flip style is the tub/sled part for draggin' your crap on the ice. All you do is just toss everything in and away you go, you can also go over some pretty nasty terrain without everything dumpin' out or falling over. No messing with bungee cords or straps. I've also fished outta both for many years, iceman is right, the only real downside to the flip, is no floor.

Hello All
im just wondering whats the big deal about haveing a Floor or not having 1 ? as for me i got sick of transporting big bulky shantys and hauling them out on the ice with your gear i have a few old 1's that are just a pain to set up and the cost of most new ones are over 200 bucks so i took my Dog House hunting blind and tryed that last year with great results high winds didnt matter i went 43 times and had to string the door side down 1 time it doesnt have a floor has its own back pack which stores in a 24 inch circle and weighs 12 pounds and easy to put in the trunk of a car if u dont have a truck my first 1 cost me 79 bucks cause i bought it during prime time hunting season but my second 1 cost 50 bucks ( on sale ) so i have 2 and there easy to set up i use 4) 8" nails to nail in the ice each loop on each corner and 2 extra's if i need to string the door side down if the high wind pushes it in some and fishing 2 people in the dog house blind is no problem with 4 holes i used it on many lakes last year just 1 more thing if u decide to buy 1 and use it a freind of mine forgot to take the roof rods out before he tryed to fold it needless to say he broke a rod which he was able to repair with a old hollow arrow shaft and some hot glue lmao i had to laugh when i heard it snap but was easyly fixed  be safe on first ice and good luck fishing)><((((--*> American Angler

When I was fishing on Higgins last year there were two guys that brought a large cabin tent out and set it up and fished through holes they had cut in the floor. They said that they bought it at a yard sale for 5 bucks. They had a table and lawn chairs in and were having a good time with out spending a lot of money.

You know, every single year I tell myself I am going to go out and buy a portable shanty. I never end up buying one though. I like to be very mobile and don't think I would be into packing everything up and moving 20 times in a day. I carry 2 buckets out onto the ice with me and everything I need fits in them just fine. Once in a while I get a little cold, but most of the time I'm catching fish and don't have time to be cold. I guess the only way it would benefit me is night fishing and I could actually get my wife to go out with me, but then again I may still have to move around a lot. How convenient are these portable flip style shanties? Do the 2 man portables really have enough room for 2 people to be comfortable in? It just seems to me that it would be a real hassle to mess with a shanty all day. I should borrow a friends for a day and see how I like it, then I can make a decision based off of that. The biggest question I have for you guys that do have these portable shanties is why do you have them. What is the biggest reason? Is it because you get cold out there, or does it give you some kind of advantage? I don't see how it could, but I don't know for sure. Is it because you don't want others to see when you are catching fish? Is it so you can take a leak when you have to? I know these questions may sound dumb to some, but I was just wondering the main reasons people buy shanties.

A shanty gives you a large advantage. First off you don't have the wind blowing snow in the hole plus if heated the hole never freezes, second the wind won't blow your line all around making strikes easy to detect and you can use a slip bobber in a heated shanty. You can shed some heavy clothing, hat, gloves. The shanty blocks your movement so you don't spook as many fish. The biggest reason is I like looking in the hole and seeing the fish.
Todays Shanty's are so light It's like pulling a light weight sled out with the benefit of a shelter. I have fished in the 2 man shanties most are good for 2 people.
As far as sitting on a bucket. When time runs short or a quick fish, I'll sit on a bucket. I put my bucket in my black sled, when I get out to my spot I use my spud and a bungee to make it stand on end. It makes a great wind break and moves quickly. Great for night walleyes.

ill second a lot of that. the main reason i bought mine was, one time i was fishing comfortably in 17 degree weather catching some dink perch but the hole was freezing up so fast and my line and guides was all frozen and i couldnt reel after a while, etc.... it was so dang frustrating....becuase i wanted to fish but couldnt due to the cold weather. with a shanty and a small heater presto your good to go....holes stay open, line doesnt get coated with ice, you can use sensitive tiny spring bobbers, etc..... so its much more than just "being cold" outside and "being warm" in a shanty.
i used to carry all my stuff but now with a pro (tub style) i just load and go, im faster WITH a shanty than i was without!

I bought an Otter cabin/medium this year and can't wait to get on the ice!!
I put it together and set it up in the basement to see how it would work. It is
easy to put up and is integrated into the sled so you can carry all your crap
with you. It has a nice, tight cover to protect the stuff in the sled.
I got it because I was paying $40-45 to rent shanties and wanted the mobility.
Also, the rental people wanted me off the lake by 5:30p and I wanted to do some walleye fishing at night. When I was researching to buy one, I checked out the Clam and other more traditional portables and there was no storage when stowed. With this one, you can put your drill and junk in the sled.
It will get me out of the wind, warm (Mr. Heater) and should pay for itself in a couple of years.

kinda confused by that statement.... what do you mean there is no storage when stowed for the CLAMs? do you mean the standard clams or the trap series?

The diff. between the clam and fish trap is: fish traps are tub for base with pull over tops. Clams are ones are flat like a pancake; you put together on the ice with poles. They are square, floor, and usally taller but no storage.
Thanks for all the replys. Im just trtying to justify spending the extra cash on a flip since I dont have that much time to get out on the ice each season.

Dan Its quality time on the ice that counts. You will always have that shanty, year after year until you are like real old or 45 :D  the 45 thing was a joke, we know guys that old don't ice fish :hide:
