Which river do you most often fish?(For trout) Which river do you like to fish the most for trout?
I most often fish the Rifle river but my all time favorite river to fish is the Pine river near Tippy.
Just want to get an better idea of where you guys are from.

Hello Dave, Where abouts on the Ausable do you fish? I like the South Branch myself, but I don't head there more than two or three times a year.(Usually during the Hex).

Dave I hope you mean the Rogue :) Myself, I like Bear Creek, The Little Manistee, and by home The Huron and Paint Creek. I tend to like water that my pole will bridge from shore to shore. WEEZER email me about the Pine, I would like to talk to you more about it.

The stream I fish the most since it is near home is Paint Creek near Rochester. I don't know if I can narrow the Michigan trout streams down to one favorite but I really enjoy the Manistee up near the Deward area. That was one of the first streams I began fly fishing on and it was fairly kind to a beginning fly fisherman :)

JNP, I used to fish Paint Creek a lot. So much so that I would have considered it my home stream. I have moved a bit further away now and don't get up there as often. Are you a member of the CVTU? They do a great job in trying to protect and improve that fishery.

That is a good one... I guess I would have to say the Mason Tract. I noticed a mention of the "Deward" area. I like that area a lot too. I flyfished for the first time on the SB of the Boardman, and explored that area as a kid (35 years ago!!) quite a bit. Too many great spots to list.. Gotta love Michigan.

Steve:

No I am not a member of CVTU.

I stopped by the creek tonight (on the way back from a mountain biking trip) just to see what the water was like and if any insects were hatching yet. (Getting ready for the opener). The water is low but not as low as I thought it might be for not having much rain this year. Saw some really small insects flying around (maybe midges or gnats) but didn't identify them (maybe I will spend more time on the entomology someday but for now I will concentrate on catching the fish :) )

Steve, I'm near the Huron River in Washtenaw County. I just picked up the book "Fish Michigan: 50 Rivers", by Tom Huggler. Where on the Huron do you fish? It seems like the Hudson Mills to Delhi stretch is well rated. Any tips would be appreciated.

I manage to get a few days a week in all over Michigan. I really like fishing the smaller Oakland County lakes in my float tube when I'm home here in Royal Oak, but manage to fish the Ausable and branches, the Rogue, Muskegon, White, Jordan and more a few times a month. I consider the fly's only area of the Manistee my 'home waters' and have a friend with a cabin there. When he's not around I use his picnic table as home base. During the major hatches, when the crowds get to be too much, I travel over to the ----- River which no fly shops, newspapers or magazines have mentioned as THE place to go.
I sell measuring equipement and this grand, old state of Michigan is my territory! I made a decision a long time ago not to turn into the typical 'lounge lizard' travelling salesman. When I'm holed up in a hotel room because of weather I'll twist up some fly's.
