anyone ever fish for chromers under the ice on lakes, harbors, or rivers? I have heard of people doing it near river mouths but have never done it myself. I want to give it a try once we get some safe ice but don't know much about the specifics (bait, lures, depth, etc.)

Lexington Harbor in January. Hit or miss on location. Usually one hole will produce and one 3 ft away nothing. Good fun on a ultralight rod/spinning reel w/2# test.

I think that there should be a few posts if you do a search on slammer rigs. We use them up on the ice on Pentwater Lake for the steelies. Baiting is basically an VERY small trebble hook with a non-floating spawn bag let down to about a foot off the bottom. You can dead stick if you want but the slammer rigs are a great way to go. Generally the guys also use a skinny gaff because steelies don't like to have their head go through an auger hole. Gaffs and the trebble hook are of course a no-no if you plan on catch and release. With the spawn bag hanging, the steelies tend to swallow the bait so check how deep they are hooked before releasing.

Good luck!

Nice Pics. I am new to the area so my Michigan geography is rather poor, but, where is Pentwater lake and do you have an plans for making a slammer rig?

Pentwater is on the west side of Michigan up north of Muskegon about an hour. Best place to access the lake is near the causeway bridge at the east end of the lake. Be careful about the ice because the east end is where the Pentwater River comes into the lake. You can do a Google search and find some good info on slammer rigs. I made my own but that's because I like to tinker. The guys who sell the original rigs are nice to buy from.

You can absolutely fish them through the ice.

Matt makes and sells Slammers. Last year we had an M-S outing on White Lake for them(didn't catch any :( ),but most of the rivers that get a decent run can be targeted.
You'll find most of the "hot spots" are on the west side of the state, but I've heard it done on the east side as well.
If you search the forums you'll find threads on it.And with a little research and sweet talk you can find out which guys from this site know how to do it ;)
