Does anyone fish for carp using flies?
I have had a lot of fun catching them on dry flies and nymphs! You get a lot of funny looks but it is a real challenge getting a carp to take a dry fly.
If there is enough interest I'll write an article on the subject and send in a few weird flies that I have luck with.

Weezer,
I fished for carp with my noodle rod and dough balls. They loved white bread but would not touch wheat bread.Carp are smart once you catch a few from the school they shut down for a day.Where I used to live they would suck the algae off the cat walks in the harbor. They fed on that stuff all day and night.Slurp slurp slurp
Maybe a wonderbread caddis would work. :)

I have been fly fishing for carp in the rivers around Midland for several years now and I think that its great sport. I find that the anglers that turn up they noses at it are usually ones who have never tried it. I know that I was in that category for a long time myself.
I've had my best luck with small dries and nymphs. A #16 pheasant tail or hares ear have been the most sucessful for me.
One thing is for sure since I've been fly fishing for Carp I've seen parts of my backing that I havn't seen since I put it on, they are a very strong fish.
Weezer, I think a article on fly fishing for Carp would be great. Go for it!

I have heard that carp are the number one game fish in England. Once a lecturer came to my fly fishing club and discussed the topic. I have never tried it, but I have been planing to. I would love to read the article.

Classicrod, Have you ever tried the sturgeon river? I used to catch a lot there when I was younger.
I live in Saginaw and there are drainage ditches, Marshes and ponds that connect to the Saginaw River that are chuck full of carp all summer long!! I see my backing several times during the "Run". They do get really spooky after the guys with spears and bows are down there for a few days. Again most people turn there noses but they don't know what they are missing.
I'm going to start that article in a couple of weeks(After winter semester is over).

Slice potatoes and lay flat on 24" x 18" Oak Board, Must be Oak to capture flavors.
Lay fillets on top of potatoes

cover onions with bacon
Heat oven to 350 F
cook for 20 min, rotate cook another 20 min
turn heat to 450 F

Throw away the carp and eat the board!!!!!!

you think the guys would appriciate a joke mixed in with the real ones? I'll post it if you want but I thought we'd keep this one to the carp guys!

Yeah, that's true, maybe we better keep it here. Someone might not catch the joke part until they were done with the recipe and saw the "eat the board" part.

If anyone is interested there is a good book out on fly fishing for Carp. "Carp on the Fly a Flyfishing Guide" by Barry Reynolds,Brad Befus and John Berryman.Alot of good information and many new patterns.
Weezer, I've never fished the Sturgeon River but it sounds good. I also want to try wading the shallows in Saginaw Bay there must be great fishing there. Thats the great thing about Carp you can find them amost anywhere you look.

Guys, The first huge wave of spawning carp have entered The marshes along the Saginaw River, I'm going to fish them on Wed so I can get some pictures for my upcoming article, It will be too early for dries but I bet I can get a few on nymphs!

Hi guys. Is it necessary to fish to carp by stalking them or do you fish blind? I'd like to try it but I'm at a loss as to how to get started. I don't know that I can think of anyplace that I've actually seen them. Or maybe I don't know what to look for. Any advice appreciated.

I normally sight fish them, They are all over the place in the Saginaw river tribs. (Ie drainage ditches and marshes) Start looking for them in those type places RIGHT NOW! They are prespawn right now. In my area they are too thick to fish(You mostly just snag up on them now) I like to wait until there are just a few of them in the early summer.
