How many here run traffic for geese on a regular basis. And if you do, what kind of luck do you have with it?
I'm usually on the "X" or at a draw area. The last few days I have been hunting private about one mile off the "X". I am suprised at the lack of interest, the geese have been in this field before but it is now cleaned of all waste grain from them buggers. Do you think they know this and won't pay attention or does it just take a ridiculous amount of decoys for trafficing to work well. I've only been using two dozen due to the extremely long walk. Any Ideas are welcome.

So, Is running traffic a waste of time?

we run traffic frequently...
you need a field between the roost and the X
it has to be in a field that would be appealing, (a hay, or bean field in the late season usually wont cut it) to make it look like the rest of the flock just decided to change feeding grounds that day..
next pile in as many decoys as possible, you need to be able to draw attention and a doze or 2 decoys usualy isnt gonna do it you have to tell them that where you are is the place to be.."everybodys doin it"
use as much mothin as possible... flags, flappers, motion, stakes, etc
and hit the calls aggressively as possible.
and ther is one other key if they by pass you... hope there is someone hunting the X

That is my problem right now. I was denied permission on the "X". landowner said he had guys who hunt it, well I'd like to see the "guys" who would pass up a field with 500-1000 geese using it daily.
Maybe this weekend I'll round up a crew of guys hopefully for like 12 dozen dekes, that might draw some attention.
Could some of the lack of interest be due to the fact that the geese have already cleaned this field of waste corn. Should I try another field that is close to the "X" that they have not been in yet? Man I hate hunting off the "X"

Yeah get a field you can hopefully drive ALL your available decoys into! Try to get it directly in the flight lane, and most preferably as close as possible to either the roost or the X. It can definitely work for stragglers and small flocks, and a nasty weather day will be a big help too.

When running traffic I like to spread the decoys out. Way out so it looks like a bigger bunch of geese than it really is. During the colder weather I use the huge shells and full body decoys. Lots of decoys does the trick. I dont know if you can have too many when running traffic.
