While hanging up my bucks on Tuesday, the property owner from across the road stopped in our camp. He complimented me on my deer, said they hadn't seen anything. He then asks if I got my deer "out back" (our property consists of 4-40's in a L shape) and pointed towards the "back" of our property (where I hunt). I said yes. He says "oh ya, we saw a decent buck running around this fall, that might be him."
While skinning my buck this weekend I find that he has been shot twice with what looks like #7 shot. Once in the neck, once in the hind 1/4. None of the pellets made it into the muscle but it was obvious that 2 shots were taken.
The neighbor is up at their property almost every weekend (they have a full blown cabin we set up a army tent). I get up there maybe once a month. It's obvoius that we have trespassers, but we have never had any real damage done, and being that I live in Midland, and the property in near Marquette, it's tough to patrol. We have seen signs that people have hunted after we left for the season, and to be honest I don't have a problem with it.
I think it's kind of weird that the guy knew where I got the deer at, and claimed to have seen him that fall before season. If I run in to him this summer while I'm up there I am going to dig a little deeper and see if his story changes....:mad:
Figures, we go all the way to Marquette, and I'm pretty sure it's weekend warriors from downstate that are screwing us. I was straight with the locals (about hunting after we left, etc.) when we got the property and have had no problems.
