I always enjoy going early to mid March, The fish are usually starting to stage in Cooks bay and you tend not to have the -30 degree wind chills that you come accross in Jan And Feb. Much milder weather and fishing is more consistent.

First ice on all the hotspots. But that is also next to last ice, the most dangerous ice.

I have lived on Simcoe my hole life and found that first ice is usually the best for constant action '10'-'12' perch but I agree the wheather is usually pretty cold so you would need a portable for sure. But last ice is also good for jumbos '12'- '14' but you usually have to be a little more patient and work a little harder to find the fish and stay on them.
I guess it's a matter of prefrence if you come along way you want action and lots of it so http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif first ice is the best.If you want size http://www.michigan-sportsman.com/forum/images/icons/icon13.gif last ice and weather are better by far, hopefully this helps and enjoy any time you can hit the hard water.

Assuming its perch your after I agree with Dusty on the timing from a hard water perspective. Been fishing the lake for 25+yrs and guiding on it for a few years now.... awesome fishery for sure. If its some real trophy fish your after ice out is the window.... these were taken this spring just after Simcoe Ice out... one of the fish was over 2lbs.

Take care and Good Fish'n.... Greg.;)

Yeah, those are pigs.

I'm trying to go twice this year. So much fishing, so little time.

Thanks, that did it. I guess others are in the same situation. It happened once before but I didn't write down the address. Happy and safe fishing to ya.
