Get a nice one man shanty thats very mobile...A few Ultra lite pole's and reels. A lantern, bucket and a bunch of ice jigs (tear drops). And an auger...
That cover's the most of it...And if you want to go extreme..Get Vexilar of an Aqua-vu..(dont ask wich is better , just search you'll find a couple threads... a few that are mine to!)

That should cover it..
if you have anymore questions, keep em' comin..there's a lot of us that would be willing to help!

Not counting your cold weather clothes, these would be my bare minimum essentials:

Boot creepers, ice picks (safety item), spud or hand auger, scoop, at least 2 light ice rods w/ reels, alligator clip weight to check for depth, assortment of teardrops, perch/crappie rigs or packages of tru turn #6 hooks/leaders to make your own, minnow bucket w/net, 5 gal bucket w/seat to hold your gear and jet sled or similar item to drag all of it out with. After that, I would get a shanty, heater, vexilar, gps, lantern, atv and so on and so forth till you run out of money or space to put more stuff. Good luck.

6" Lazer Hand Auger and Ice Scoop -- $60-$70
Bucket to sit on -- $3
A few rods & reel combos -- $40-$70
Ice Line -- $10
Assortment of ice jigs from www.jamminjigs.com (neon glows are awesome) -- $20
Lantern $30
Weatherproof boots rated to -100degree F -- $120
Safety Ice Picks & Creepers -- $15
Minnow Bucket -- $10

Total -- $348 -- spend the rest on bait.

If you can't afford a shanty, you might want to get one of those jet sleds or a sled with a base where you can prop up behind you and use as a windbreaker.

Best thing to obtain is an experienced friend who has gear and can take you out. Talk with other fishermen and check out the gear and get their opinions. My biggest mistake starting out was buying too cheap of equipment and then having to upgrade the next year. Sometimes the difference in quality was just a few dollars more. Here are a few items I had to upgrade after the first year because they didn't perform well or wore out:

Hand auger, I won't say what kind but it's blue.
Cheap spud
Tip-ups
Cheap and small shanty
Inadequate clothing
