I recently moved to East Lansing from Vermont. I'm looking for advice on where to find some decent fly fishing reasonably close to home. Is there any decent fishing within an half an hour of Lansing? As for weekend trips are there good streams- looking for water that is not too crowded- within 2 or so hours?

By the way, what is a "chuck and duck"? I've done some steelheading in Western NY and that is a term I've not heard before.

Thanks for any help.

I live in the Lansing area (Grand Ledge). When I need a "quick fix" of flyfishing for trout, I run over the the Grand Rapids area and fish the Rouge River in the Rockford area. Pretty good fishing and less than 1 hour away. For longer trips...The AuSauble system around Rosscommon and Grayling, the upper sections of the White River around White Cloud, and the Pere Marquette and Baldwin rivers around the Baldwin area are some other popular areas. There are some great books in the book section of this site that will help you get closer.. Good Luck, MI has some beautiful rivers!!

Welcome to Michigan,
I don't think you have to travel more than
8 miles to find a fishable water anywhere in Michigan.Let us know what you think

Thanks MIBow/Trout. Someone mentioned the Rouge the other day. He said that it gets pretty crowded on the weekends. Is this true?

Trout, I could try fishing the Red Cedar (less than a mile away) but if anything can grow in that water I'm not sure I want to catch it :)

Chris,
Check with BC Nymph Co.in Lansing I'm sure that they can point you in the right direction. Their Ph. number is (877)321-3800
They also have a web site; www.bcnymph.com (http://www.bcnymph.com)
One of my favoite spots for trout is the South Branch of the Au Sable(Mason Tract) near Rosscommon. I think you will find that Michigan doesn't have a shortage of great places to fly fish. Good luck.

The chuck and Duck method of fly fishing steelhead is basically just drift fishing with a fly reel and rod. The angler usually spools on some backing, connectes a good length of heavy amnesia and then attaches a clear mono leader with several split shots attached to get the fly down to the bottom.
If you ever head over to the PM you will see guys using this method and you'll know exactly where the term comes from!!

Chuck @ Duck : When useing large weighted streamers you use wide open loop chuck on the forword cast and duck on the back cast. If you don't you may get that streamer in the ear. Belive me that hurts I been thier done that.BTW if you crimp the barbs down t's less of a problum getting the hook out of the ear.You might want a small first aid with you, I carry one just in case.
