You've pretty much answered your own question. No doubt you can get all the apples you want if you just knock on a few doors.

I have always wanted to go and ask the owners of that apple orchard right off US 10 near midland. All of those apples just fall down and rot. I may next year.

I live by a carrot farm and can't even get a deal, I did get a half ton of sugar beets for free from a friend of mine thats works for a beet farmer.

Go to any feed store/farm supply store.

They normally have apples, carrots, shelled corn, corn on the shell, molasses, sugar beets, etc. In Midland, Cahoon's has Sugar Beets by the scoop load if you want them dumped in the back of your truck, or 100# of shelled corn for like $7.

Knock on a farmer's door and ask to buy some corn. It works great to take a 5 gallon bucket to haul the corn in. One of those should hold about $1.50 worth of shelled corn at this year's prices. That's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying the stuff bagged up and sitting at a gas station somewhere.
