every morning and evening this weekend this black squirrel and a few other sounded like the biggest buck around coming through the woods.....finally got sick of him yesterday evening and shot him with my bow......just wondering if anyone else has shot squirrels with a bow or got sick of them

I'd love to, just can't get a field tip out in time, I'm not wasting a broadhead on a squirrel. Although, yesterday I saw a mink chasing birds and squirrels around my stand,, cool looking critter. I actually drew back on it, but wasn't sure on the "legalities" of it, so I let him walk.

I use them as a source of entertainment. The squirrls have helped me pass allot of time in the woods. But yes, I have been known to shoot a few.

I shot two this past friday. The second one was on video :)

The first one was with a field tip and it didn't work well. The arrow impaled him at fifteen yards right through the vitals. He ran away with my arrow!!! I climbed down and caught up with him in the thicket he ran in to and finished him off.

The second was with a "judo"-point. That one was dead right there.

I appreciate squirrels myself, they and jays, etc.alert me to the presence of approaching deer.A heads-up,so to speak.Anyone with much experience w/wildlife encounters learns the different footfalls(cadence) of various common critters and can respond accordingly.Squirrels are among the easiest of these to become accustomed to.

More than not the tree rats have been a good little heads up in the woods for me too. Just not my favorite game.

I trust you dudes are good sportsmen and EAT the squirrels you kill? If you're not going to eat them-don't kill 'em.Except for pine squirrels that is.

And the reason it's okay to shoot "pine squirrels" and not eat them where it's a sin to do the same with fox's or gray's would be?

By the way. There's no such thing as a Pine Squirrel. I assume you mean Red Squirrel?

I like the little buggers. Twice this year I've had fox squirrels climb up the adjacent tree and look me in the eye. No more than 5ft. They're actually intimadating up close.

But I dont mind watching'em climb around, I would think they put the deer at ease if not mask some noise in the stand.

Yure correct SKIBUM RED squirrel-looked it up in the hunt guide. My bad.
Fox squirrels are commonly referred to as "red' Squirrels throughout the midwest due to the color of their pelt. That's why I call the tiny ones pine squirrels.Thry eat lots of pine nuts.

I've never had one "mask" any noise for me,, I've had a few "screw" me a few times when deer were coming in,, they'd wait until the squirrels left before they'd commit, by then it was DARK!!

Kinda repeating myself, but some of the best meat I have ever eaten was off of red squirrels. The flavor is out of this world, better than the best beef steak. If you have never eaten one you really owe it to yourself to try it at least once.

I can't count all the suirrels I saw the last 2 days. Monday while bow hunting, I saw a couple run all around and betgween a deer's legs. It didn't bother the deer at all.

The only time they seem to bother me is when it's still dark and there moving around behind me or under my stand because you’re not sure what it is. This year I have been closely listening to them so I could try and tell their movements from the deer. A little hard if the deer are coming in slow.

I was watching a fox squirrel yesterday and he was pretty entertaining. He was on the tree behind me and didn't have a clue I was up in my stand for a long time. He finally noticed me and my neck was hurting from turning so I quit watching him.

With all of the rain, there were all kinds of noises yesterday. I heard something right above my head and I looked up to see Mr. squirrel glaring down at me about 2 feet from me. His tail was twitching and I think I said something like....%!#!%@!!!! I thought he was going to pounce on me for sure. He scurried down the tree and all over the stand and then I couldn't see him. I was standing by then and was looking all over for the squirrel. I even went as far as checking the back of my coat. I've watched Christmas Vacation too many times.

I love to watch them!!!!! Nothing else in the woods to watch when deer hunting. No deer to watch so the tree rats are fun to watch:mad:
