Ok, I have a kind of embarassing problem concerning my fly Rod. Tuesday when i left the river I couldn't get my rod apart!!! This is the third time I have had this problem with this rod. I managed to get it apart after a cussing match with it but I was wondering if anybody else has this problem and How do I correct it?
Two different flyshops gave me advice but I don't know who to believe. The one shop said that I should put ferrule wax on the ferule and the other shop told me NEVER put wax on the ferule!!!!! What should I do????? I could send the rod back to the company but then I would be screwed for the spring run!!
Thanks ~Rick

Never wax ferrules.Clean them with a soft cloth with a small amount of lighter fluid.Very carefully. If this does not help try some 6000 grit paper.Thats thousandth. on the male ferrule.Unless you have damaged the ferrules a good cleaning should work.Make a cotton rod bag to help keep you rod clean while transporting it and better yet make a PVC pipe case to protect it even more. Some trout bums may look shocked at the plastic rod tube, just tell them you loaned your good one to John Gierach. ;)

I do keep my rod in the sock and Tube! I wonder if I have a bad rod!? It's a Sage so you can imagine I take care of it the best I can. I don't use the wax right now but Ray Schmidt was the guy that told me to use it.
Do you think that it just got dirty inside the female part?

Your story reminded me of an old man I knew that would always rub a little ear wax on his rod just before fitting them together. He never had any problem getting them apart, but I don't sujest it because thats kinda nasty.

Well if Ray Schmidt you to do it, he's probably right.

Hey deerless, that really does work well though. If a little earwax is used on a tight ferrule and the rod still won't pop apart, place the rod behind your knees with your hands gripping the rod tightly on the outside of each and use your knees as spreaders. I've taken apart some sandy ones for people like that!

If anyone is near you when this happens, each of you grab each section of the rod near the ferrule and pull. By this I don't mean to have a tug-of-war with the rod, each of you have both hands on both sections of the rod, not one person on one section and one on the other. It works like a dream.
The first bet is like someone earlier said though, behind the knee's, using your legs.

Well I stand corrected.I was always told that wax can hold dirt which will cause more damage later.Hey I guess things can change?

Weezer,
I see that the www.flyanglersonline (http://www.flyanglersonline) website has a general comment on the use of ferrule lube and a product review on U-40 Ferrule Lube.
