Left the St Jean ramp just behind Hotwired this morning and headed for the Muskie Hole formally known as the Sturgeon Hole. The Walleye had lock jaw big time this morning and neither Curt nor I could put one in the boat. I tried flutter spoons and many many different color jig heads with different types of plastics and live bait but to no avail. Curt switched over to wire and still couldn't buy a fish. I had a couple short hits but I can't say that they were Walleye. Now for the fun part of the story............Esox, are you listening?..........I ended up 3 for 5 on Muskie while jigging for Walleye! :yikes: Heck, I've had many days worse than that when I'm actually targeting them. I also saw many other boats with Muskie on including the handliners. The 3 fish I boated were in the approx range of 34 to 40 inches but now come the one that got away story. I felt a hit and set the hook and this fish just slowly took drag at will. I thought I might have a Sturgeon on because there was nothing I could due with it. I used the boat to chase it a bit and after about 15 minutes, I started making progress and was gaining line back. I figured if it was a Muskie, my Salmon sized net would probably handle it. One look at this bruiser and I threw the net on the floor. The jig was right on the outside of the mouth so cutting me off with its teeth was probably not going to happen. I had this fish to the side of the boat 5 different times as I was thinking about a replica mount. 3 times, I had my hand in his gill plate but he would have nothing to do with that. He finally did the old roll on the surface and my line wrapped around his head and snap.......the line went slack. I've caught my share of Muskie and I usually don't get too excited but this fish was a pig! I know it was over 50 inches and if I had to take a guess, I'd estimate it at 52 and probably in the 35 lb range. That would have been my biggest if my estimate is at all acurate. Anyway, he's still out there. Kind of makes me want to hang up my Perch rods and chase some of those fall monsters! :)

Nice catch man. My dad's buddy does musky tourny's on LK. St.Clair and I think his biggest is 54in. but I'm not sure. He uses's Tiger Tubes and does well. He came in second place in one tourny. Also whay lb. line were you using because I got a 38in(my only musky) on 6lb. He hit right at the boat with a #7 Silver rapala.

"my line wrapped around his head and snap.......the line went slack. "

The very reason I use Fireline.

Not a bad day off John.!!

Mike, I do use fireline when jigging but I add a couple feet of Maxima or Seaguars florocarbon leader at the jig. Oh well, it was still very exciting and I would have released it anyway. Esox would have my scalp if I kept it. :p

I Was out there also in the muskie hole but only got 1. Did manage to get a couple eyes though 1-14" and one that went 4 lbs. The fish seemed to shut down once the sun came out. Finished the day up infront of 9 mile w/ about 40 perch most in the 8-9 inch range. Great nov. day on the pond.

LOL I would've kept it, I eat what I catch I don't mount it. I've added a leader before when fishing fireline and I havent noticed getting anymore fish as with out it. I guess it's because I use 6lb fireline which has a 4lb. Dia.

do you think the muskie scared the eyes out of there? i have good info that the eyes were stacked up on the american side before the wind.who knows where they are now? i have jigged up a couple 25 pounders but none that big. good work.

A week ago Sunday, me and a buddy went 2 for 4 on the Muskies (42" and 46"). The 46" fish jumped into the boat while I was fighting it. We also caught 11 walleyes up to 5 lbs, a 5 1/2 lb smallie and several nice sheep. One trick I use when fishing with muskies around is to use 17lb Green XT for my leader line (24 inches), fireline above that. It doesn't seem to bother the walleyes and gives you a better chance with the muskies.

The 2 that we lost just spit the hook. No breakoffs.

That was the right call today...we got small small perch off 12 mile and then a few more on the way home off New Baltimore but the lake was chocolate milk everywhere from canada to the us side. Talked with one boat in the middle channel out toward the lake jigging...4 walleyes.

John, I have had that same situation before. Do you have Boga Grips or something similar? You can get the fish lip locked on the lower part of the mouth alot easier than trying to get a gill with your hand...not to mention I am a wimp and afraid of those teeth and sharp gills on those big ones!

I was out there yesterday . I Didn't hit a fish until I got way out towards the end of the Sturgeon hole, by the grn. & red can. They seemed stacked pretty well In that area.

It sounded like you had a great time playing with the Musky, Several boats were trolling for sky's from the apartment bldg. to the sturgeon hole. they were trolling the drop off real close to shore.

I do the same thing John in the spring for Detroit river snags. Alot easier breaking floro than Fireline.

Good advise Mike. I feel sorry for much of the next generation. This global economy is going to make it tough for many of our children and friends. Well, hopefully he remembers how to catch fish so at least he won't stave! :p ;)

John,
I should have known that the dusty old Smokercraft had a Muskie magnet attached to it. ;)
You had more tugs than I had today and it was great to talk to you again and share a barley pop.
Going to try again on Friday at either the Sturgeon Hole or I may head up to Decker's for a change.
Later,

That was directed at my son so not to worry.
Hotwired, thanks for the brew and it was nice fishing in close proxcimity with you. Heck, I started out following your line because I know you have the handle on these fish down there but it just wasn't meant to be today for Walleye. Those Muskie sure did like my meat offering though. Glad I grabbed a scoop before I headed out! :)

You would'nt have done any better with us John. Nice day for Nov. 8th but not for catching big perch. We stoped at the the ol spring hot spot first because the water was clean and WAM I put a 11" in the boat. Well it was down hill from there. Looks like next week befor Can. clears up.

Yeah, I have next Monday off work and 4 1/2 days vacation left. I also have 2 gallons of minnows in my bait tank just waiting to feed some Perch. The temps have been great but these darn winds are hurting the fishing big time. :(

Where Is The Sturgeon Hole At, In The Detroit River, Or Lake St. Clair
Gone Fishing, You Mentioned You Launched From St. Jean, To Go There, any Help Would Be Appreciated. Thanks.

The Sturgeon Hole is just SE of the tip of Peache Island and is in LSC. St Jean ramp is at the foot of St Jean Rd where it dead ends at the Detroit River. As you are going towards the river, St Jean will dead end and you need to make a quick jog left and then right to get down to the ramp. If you are going south on Jefferson, St Jean is just a little past Conner Ave.

Yep thats it. It is in Canadian waters. If you find clear water or semi clear water you may also want to try the range light on the American side of peach island. Good luck. Let us know how you do
