I need to reseal the lower unit of my Johnson 15 horse due to water getting in. I was wondering if anybody has any pointers before I start this project. Looks like I can get the seal kit at Napa. From what I understand, the prop seals are 2 seals, 1 installed on way and the other the other way. Can anybody verify this and/or recommend a removal and installation process.

The upper seals where the driveshaft, water tube, exhaust come in should be easy to replace o-rings. What about the shift rod, is that a difficult seal to get at.

I dont have a repair manual and if this job is simple enough I would prefer not to spend the money on one. But if absolutely necessary I can get one. Anybody know where they are sold?

Thanks,
Rich

Borrow one from your local library!! If they do not have the one you need, typically one of the other units in their group will. Worked for me MANY times.

ok what year is your 15? if you are not sure post your model number and we can look her up,,,is it an old split bullet? or is the bullet solid? the year will make a big difference as how to proceed and also as to the proper tools.

I would advise you to get a manual.as far as special tools?you may or may not need them,it all depends on how easy or how hard she comes apart.
