Don't feel bad, you are not the one who pulled the trigger, he did. And now he will pay the price. Hat's off to you partner, I am sure it wasn't easy, but it WAS the right thing to do!!!:)

Kodiak,
You are an asset to our sport. Your friend is not. You did the right thing.

That had to be difficult for you turning in a one time friend that you used to hunt with. Most people would not do it. You definitely did the right thing though and I hope this doesn't cause any hard problems with you. Whatever the case, you should know you have hundreds of fellows who visit this forum that are on your side. Please keep us posted on the outcome.
btw, many years ago I hunted with a "friend" too. We used to do a lot of pheasant hunting together and had been friends for a long time. One fine morning, we were hunting birds when a doe popped up about 15 yards from us. Next thing I knew, he had shot it. Wow. I could hardly believe what happened. He told me to get down as we weren't far from the road. The doe got back up, so he shot it again (this was birdshot he used too). Well, he gutted it and we went to the creek so he could wash up. Then to top things off, he was then afraid to go back after the thing, so as far as I know, it laid there to rot. We had no coyotes back then either. That wore on me for years. I was very young then but that was the last time we went bird hunting together for sure. Had I been older and perhaps wiser, I would have turned him in, but being a kid, I just kept it to myself. It has been a hard thing to live with all these years and I know for a fact that he has shot many illegal game since, but not with me along.

Bravo! You did the hard thing, but the right thing. I have never had a shot at a 14-point deer and this ^$$hole takes one illegally? You definitely did the right thing. All he had to do was hunt the deer the right way. Gun season is only two weeks away.
the rest of these guys - I'd have 'dropped a dime' too - in a heartbeat !
Good job
and welcome to the site - :)

Sometimes doing the right thing is not the easy thing .
It's when we do the right thing in spite of it's cost that we grow...
Congratulations upon joining the site, and thank you for doing the right thing. ;)

Kodiak, you did the right thing. Well done...
Not knowing him or the situation, but if they throw the book at him (and hopefully they will) he will be in some serious trouble. You need to be careful with who you tell, as he can easily put 2 and 2 together. (not to mention the 12,000+ on this site) ;) .
BTW, Welcome to M-S! :)

What does RAP do to a person who poaches a deer? I think they get their weapon and vehicle impounded and they pay a fine and possibly get jail time. Anybody know for sure?

You did the right thing my friend. I have a story of giagantic proportions that you would like to hear. Unfortunately I do not feel this is the right forum as which to explain. We all need to police ourselves in this manner to prevent these things from happening. I would imagine that by the exit wound a good taxidermist certainly would of figured this out. GOOD LUCK, KEEP US POSTED

Boher can answer the possible fines, I don't think he'll get jail or a vehicle impound (doesn't sound like a vehicle was used). Probably lose the rifle, license for a few years and hefty fine.
Tough thing to do Kodiak. Good for you! Welcome to the site.

I gotta admit, I was getting riled when I first started reading.
You did the right thing. Thank You.
Wow, that is to bad. I do commend you on your convictions no doubt it was the right thing to do. Amazes me the people that can claim a trophy on their wall or otherwise that was taken illegally.
Good job

I have found in life taking the easy way out is never the right thing to do. When I lived in North Carolina I quit a really nice hunting club because the members were not ethical hunters and they refused to tag deer and baited ducks.
Live is about making choices and sometimes you have to make a tough one. It was not easy but I know you made the right call. Feel free to share a blind with me someday. I like hunting with people who do the right thing even when no one is looking.

Even though I may not of liked turning the guy in I would have done the same thing. Maybe losing his guns and hunting privledges for a while will change his mind. Too bad for him. Keep us posted if you hear what he gets from the courts. Good job. True sportsman must :grouphug: together.

I don't know man, your "buddy" is going to know who turned him in, just hope he doesn't drop YOU in your tracks. Know what I mean vern?
Never know what a man might do to the guy who causes him $1000+ in fines, loss of a hunting rifle and years of lost hunting rights.

The guy should have known what could happen before he pulled the trigger. For all he may know one of his neighbors could have called the man in green. If you play you pay sooner or later.

Ohh I'm not saying he done the wrong thing, but when your the only one who knows it's going to be obvious who narc'd.
Might have been smarter to call and pretend to be a neighbor that heard a shot and saw flashlights or something.

thats what I'm talking about... and now what everyone on the site is "talkin" about. Don't get me wrong, you did the right thing, and I commend you. But, telling the story on a web site of a "guy" in "Oakland County", that "shot a buck illegally with his rifle", then asked a "buddy" to help track it. Then the buddy turns him in.... The jury's still out there on this one for me. IMHO.
Either way, if that is the "whole story". you got some kahonas. well done. Please keep us updated.
Wow. You must have been torn up doing that. You'll look back on that decision with pride though.
There is such thing as karma, especially in nature. Some day, in some way, you'll be rewarded for being a steward of our sport.
Since I can't find a smilie of a standing ovation, I'll offer you this on instead

Jigawhat, are you saying that you doubt the story? You are thinking that the guy who told the story is the one who poached the deer? I'm trying to read between your lines. How am I doing? I hope the story is genuine ;) .

I'm sure that was a tough call to make. You did the right thing. You won't be hunting with him for a long time, because he won't be able to, what an idiot!!! I know a guy that did this and it cost him 5 years hunting privlidges/fines. Life is short, not worth it IMO.

I'm just a little suspect, thats all. I don't think he's the one that poached the deer. I want to beleive the story as it is, and I guess I do... :16suspect The story is very interesting tho, and without knowing Kodiak's background I'm even more suspect of why anyone would join a site to tell people that he turned in a poacher...
If I were to turn in a poacher, you can bet yur behind, I'd be pretty quiet about it. Or at least the details of it.... thats all. I just hope, like StumpJumper said, this "buddy" doesn't come a knockin on the door again all fired up!

Absolutey the right thing to do...no question about it!! Unfortunately, I bet 95% of the "hunters" in this state would not turn a "friend" in, which is unfortunate as hell. Once again, from all of us who really appreciate deer and ethical deer hunting .. thanks for doing the right thing!!! :)

This story is a wonderful example of what can happen when the word Massive 15 point is used.
Had it been a doe, then what?
The poster made three posts fellas, think about that.
If he is telling the truth, which I suspect is doubtful, why give us so many details?
I don't condone poaching at all.
Truthfully I'm more upset with the amount of carrots used.
Your friend should have waitied for Da Turdy point!

Only from the self righteous no it all that you are Trout.
Maybe the guy has 3 posts because he has a life and doesn’t spend every waking moment posting on MS.com??
Let’s wait until he hits 4000 before anything he has to say is credible??
I reread his post and until proven wrong believe it.

Too late for me...guess I missed it all. I can read between the lines though. I'm one of the 95% I guess. Wouldn't turn a friend in, would call him on it, but wouldn't turn him in.
Each their own though, so if you felt that was the right thing to do. Stand behind it.
I can tell you one thing though, if i called a friend out it wouldn't be behind his back. If I had a problem with him, i'd tell it right to his face. If I turned him in, when he bitches I wouldn't act like I really game a damn about his gripping. I'd tell him what he did was wrong and deserved it. In the end i'm sure we wouldn't be friends anymore. That's being a man and truly standing up for what you believe in. It's one thing to make the call, and another to stand up for the call you made.
Just my .02 worth. But hey I could be all wet, I didn't even get to read the first post!

Kodiak,
I apologize if in fact the story is true. By no means am I trying to call you on it, or jump down anyone's throat. I just think its odd to come on here and share all the details of turning someone in, thats all. You did do the right thing by turning him in. But like Death From Above said. Its one thiong to make the call, its another to stand behind it. And I'll add, its another to not bring it to the worlds attention for pats on the back.
Sorry, dude. Just my opinion. Good luck to you as well.
