View Full Version : Shooting Cougars
I try to stay out of the cougar debate, but I do have a question????
Is it legal to shoot a cougar if you see one in MIchigan?
I have heard you can't because it is a protected species, and I also heard you can because it is listed as a non native species and doesn't fall under the protection because it is probably a pet that got loose.
Just want to know incase I'mone of the lucky one to see one

directly form the hunting and trapping guide
Protected Wildlife
Eagles, hawks, owls, swans, spruce and sharp-tailed grouse,
wolverines, wolves, lynx, moose, cougars, cub bears, and sows
accompanied by cubs, and all white or albino deer may not be taken
at any time. All nongame birds are protected, except starlings, English
sparrows and feral pigeons.
Certain exotic cervids (members of the deer and elk family) found
outside of a fence of a registered cervidae facility for more than 12 hours
may be taken by hunting year-round. Please contact the nearest DNR
Operations Service Center for further information.
If I see one I'm going to be shooting the crap out of that thing until My SD card is full and my DVC tape is full.

Has this always been in the guide or is it something they put in the last couple of years?

If I see one in Ionia County I'm shooting it so I don't have to listen to the "do they exhist" argument all the dang time. It will be well worth the fines and jail time!!! :bash: JK ;)
and I'll say it again -
I don't think ANYONE will dispute the fact that there are cougar(s) running around the state of Michigan -
The singlar question is simply:
Is there a breading population of courgars in Michgian?
That is the question everyone want's an answer too - there is no - no - no - proof that has been offered up to prove a breeding population .
If/When that proof is presented, documented and authenticated - your going to see 'instant regulation' and restrictions too - to those areas that are affected.
That, unfortunatly, will include the Sleeping Bear National Seashore - anyone that hasn't been there yet should hurry up an go before it's closed down to humans in order to protect the breading courgars that may reside there.
ferg....
If you do shoot one, you will go to jail - no question. (token on topic line) :)

Where do you live? If I shoot one, will you take the responsibility for it?

My question is Why do you want to kill it? Shoot some good pictures of it and be happy you got to see one. Some good digital photos or video would go a long ways toward proving they live in Michigan without haming them and give the DNR or whoever a good place to start studing them. Trout King unless you are ready to pay about 10 grand in fines, not to mention jail time you might want to think twice.

Huntingfool, I was in no way being serious at all. Just a little joshing!!! I wouldn't shoot a cougar if I saw one. I don't think I'll be seeing any anyway. Just clarifying that I was joking.

If you can make out a tag in the ear, whack it.
If not, get pics.
I was bowhunting a farm in Indiana once, when a damned bison came into my set up. No kidding. Had I not known there was a bison ranch not too far from there....

I live in Jackson County and we were talking about the Cougar thing and had the same debate. My buddie called the DNR and was told it was legal to shoot the cougar with no criminal legal problem. It is a non native species and is not protected in Michigan.

Your buddy better call someone else, if you shoot it you will be in for leagle trouble unless you can prove it's a pet and then the owner can nail you. At 1 time they were native to Michigan, they figure they wiped them out around 1900 I think it was.

SHOOT KENNY!!! it's coming right at us!!!!! Or whatever those guys on the South Park show might say!!!! People who kill a cougar will not get anything more than a ticket, or a small fine maybe. They will get a lawyer and say it was self defense and this entire cougar story will be over. I personally can't wait until some do-gooder gets mauled by a cougar, some PETA geek. I bet he'll be biting his tongue.

I hope you have a law degree. It was all over the news on tv and in the papers when the horse was killed that if you shoot it look forward to a 10,000 dollar fine and jail time. But hay if you consider that nothing thats you but don't post wrong info for someone reading this and they get into big trouble for it.
