Looking at buying a 9.9hp 1970's outboard Chrysler motor. One guy I talked to said those motors were junk and hard to repair etc..Anybody have the same or different opinions on these type, age of motors?!?!? Thanks.

Guy I might be buying from said it runs real good.

Don't know much about them myself. But my brother is an ace mechanic. Has plenty of experience with outboards, and basically says the same. If it is any indication, the "Force" outboards that bayliner uses are the same motor.

MHO. those are not bad motors, you will hear lots of people bashing them but if you talk to most anyone who has had one they will most likely tell you that they were happy with it.
I have serviced many of them and the biggest problem on the smaller Chryslers is a pin that goes through the recoil assay has a habit of working it's way out this can be fixed with a dab of epoxy. parts for general maintenance can be found at most merci dealers but if you find yourself needing a bearing carrier, gear set or anything major you may have trouble finding them

i've got a 35 and 115 chrysler... the 35 the lower ends are junk! and mines a 74, got a bad coil and nobody can even look up part numbers on this piece of crap.

115 i think is a good motor, just had one cylinder run lean and burned the piston out.

i guess the old sailboat motors were pretty nice...don't know for sure...

tonga, if you could help with my 35 i'd appreciate it.

For the same money, I'll bet you can find a Merc or a Rude that will be easier to service than that old Chrysler. I've known a couple people with the Chryslers... they were always cussing and swearing at them... pull...pull...pull...swear...pull...pull.... pull.... cuss.... you get the picture.

Heck, if you really want a motor to cuss and swear at I've got an old Sears 5 hp air cooled I'd give away cheap! Always ran o.k. but no reverse (turn the motor all the way around for reverse) and it was a bit loud when going fast. Been in the basement for a Loooooong time.
