I went out with both my dogs on my property Saturday morning. We put up at least two dozen Woodcock in about three hours before the rain started. Shot half a box of shells and ended up with two birds and a couple bunnies.

The big guy on the left has a bit of a rabbit fetish. My wife let me bring him with for once (He's 'her' dog).

Vixen likes to pose for pics.

I just love variety. Too bad the ducks weren't flying our way.

A bit blurry, but it's Vixen retrieving a woodcock. She delivered both birds to hand but wouldn't touch the bunnies. I'll have to work on that.
As soon as this rain stops we'll be back at 'em. It hasn't rained all year and now it comes at the worst possible time.

Nice pics. . .we wound up with 9 woodcock Saturday, ducks were also not cooperating for us all weekend or we were missing. ;)
I was too tired to load up the pics last night, I'll do so tonight or tomorrow.

Sure was. I found a bunch of wild parsley a few weeks ago and I was waiting for a reason to harvest it. The roots look like small parsnips and are a nice addition to a game stew.

BarryPatch, nice pictures and story. How were the rabbits, with it not being really cold yet. Usually the ones that I've shot before it gets cold, have those spots(or whtaever you what to call them)on them. Now. I usually wait till there's snow on the ground before shooting a rabbit. Sure do enjoy a good rabbit stew though. Your pictures made me start thinking, rabbit stew, MMmmmm. Brian.

No 'spots'. Fleas & ticks used to be a consideration in warm weather, but both my dogs are on heartgard plus. By October there normally won't be any warbles (http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10370_12150_12220-26354--,00.html). Internal parisites are not affected by cold. The only reason to wait for snow is so the cover is matted down and you can see their tracks.

I skipped work this morning :) and had a limit by nine. These birds have been great for the pup. She did some nice nose work with some fine points. Retrieves were pretty nice too

Got another limit Saturday morning. Less birds and the first hard frost. I hope they stick around for one more hunt :) .
