Hello everyone,
My first email online other than my introduction to the website.
Anyways, I drew a Shiawassee State Game permit for Oct. 31 - Nov. 6. Any ideas on good spots to hunt? I realize if someone out there has a really good spot they wouldn't tell me. I'm looking for the guy who has had luck in the past but doesn't have a permit this year.
I'll only be hunting maybe 1 day. I don't know if I should try to tromp in as close to the duck hunting areas in the middle and get as close as possible, or hang back by the parking lots in the hardwoods. Should I hunt the south, west or north parking areas.
Maybe someone out there has some input.
Thanks

Get yourself a lightweight climber and a mountain bike and ride well out away from most other hunters.
Good Luck

I've been told to hunt the south end of the state land in that small rectangle area. Any thoughts on that part of the state game area?

Years ago when I used to hunt the SGA I would go in on the north end off of Miller road and hunt the woods to the west of the parking area. I believe back then that area was A8. Used to see lots of deer in there and some good bucks. Never had a shot opportunity, but that was before treestands were legal. If you do happen to go back into that area, walk the dike on the north edge of the woods all the way to the end to the west. Then, if the wind is out of the south or sw set up about 40 yds south of the dike. The deer used to move from west to east and back and forth from the private land to the west of the state land. All the property to the north is also private, at least it was about 20 years ago.If you have a north wind, go in off of Prior rd, which is north of St Charles crossing M52. Go east on Prior til it turns into an unimproved dirt road. There is state land on the north side of the road with a couple parking areas. That used to be a good spot also. Go online to Michigan DNR and I think you can download a map of the entire SGA from there. Used to be alot of deer in that area, don't know how it is now but there have been some good bucks taken from there in the past. Hope this helps a little, good luck!
