GRAND MARAIS - Activists hoping to secure $6 million in federal funding to restore a deep water harbor at Grand Marais say two rescue incidents over the summer attest to the area's importance as a mariner's refuge.

Been there many times... never realized they were facing this issue with the harbor. Sounds like money well spent to me.

People drown every year on the east side and i saw an aerial picture of the harbor ands its all silted in. :(

Doesn't look all that silted in to me in this picture... but I'm not sure how old this pic is. I know it's less than 6 years old since my buddies cottage is vissible. His place is the one near the right side on the beach... closest cottage to the shoreline in Grand Marais... somebody lost their job giving him the build permit.

all the sand must be comming from the shorline east of the harbor seems like every year we go to the school forest and drive out to the shorline it gets about 15 feet shorter cottages that were 100 ft back from the shoreline are darn near in the drink.


only 17 more days till i'm back up there for some hunting bow and gun:woohoo1:

$1.5 million targeted to repair harbor

GRAND MARAIS - More than $5.7 million in federal funding was approved Tuesday for an extensive list of northern Michigan projects, including $1.5 million for Grand Marais Harbor breakwater replacement.

Under the fiscal year 2006 Energy and Water Appropriations bill voted on Tuesday by the House of Representatives, the Grand Marais Harbor will receive more than $1.5 million toward a $6 million breakwater replacement project.
