God! How I used to look forward to October 20th! I had raised and trained bird dogs since I was 7 years old. I used to get as giddy about October 20th back then as I did about the opener of deer season now. I came here to see if there were many posts, and noted only one about pheasant hunting.
I am sure others that were around in the late 70's and early 80's have some pretty special memmories of past October 20ths. It is really sad that now it seems like just another day?

Been there, walked through those swamps ;)

Now I'd feel guilty hunting Pheasants most of the places around here. They are few and far between. I know of only one place that has a huntable population and I get an invite every couple years. The good old days ;)

In the same boat. Oct 20 was a big day for me from the time I could carry a shotgun all the way through college. I now live across the road from the same fields we always hunted and here I am at work and my shorthair is left whining in the pen. Must be some bird dog sense that told him it was opening day. I couldn't look him in the eye this morning.

I know what you mean...

I can remember the 60's a young boy tagging along with my dad and his brit named "DUKE". Got my first shot in 68. That dog was the last serious bird dog we owned.

Did some walking with my brother in the 70's. We managed a few. Don't even see them now. And don't even hear them cackle in the spring. Kinda depressing thinking about it.

I followed my dad when I was 10 years old with my bb gun, then at 12 I got my first 20 gauge. Got that day off from school every year to go.
Then by the late 70's birds were hard to come by, land was harder to find to hunt on.
So I took up bow hunting all thorough the 80's & 90's & got tired of the popularity of bowhunting & found out about grouse.
With all the public land within a couple hours drive & the king of gamebirds(grouse) I'm back in heaven again.
Just don't have much vacation time or I'd be out today, just for old times sake(& dad)

Guys,

I have to tell ya, you need to look at the Upland and Dog Forum. There are several stories there about todays successful Opener. Granted, the Skies were not black with flushing Roosters, but they were there. Also alittle piece of advise, if you want better Pheasant Hunting, the squeaky wheel gets the grease:grouphug: . Join Pheasants Forever, go to NRC meetings, write letters to Al Stewart (Upland Bird Biologist and Bird Hunter) at the DNR. MAKE YOUR VOICES HEARD!!! If you let it slide by, they'll just figure it wasn't that important. Good Luck. FRANK
