an awesome weekend of duck hunting! Here's the story. My wife's grandfather has 180 acres in Glennie with 90 acres of landlocked federal land bordering the back 40. I have been bow hunting that area for years and have done quite well however this weekend with the heat and wind the deer were just not moving. I decided to explore the federal land (which I have never done before)....guess what I found....a 4-5 acre beaver pond with about 100+ woodies and a few mallards and teal. There is absolutely no easy way to get back there, in fact it is just about impossible without going through our property. This was, without a doubt, the most virgin land I have ever explored. I have never seen so many ducks congregated in suck a small place, it was truly something straight out of a magazine. Fortunately I never leave the house without my waterfowl gear. We headed back to camp, packed our gear and headed back to the pond. As soon as the birds got up they circled and circled until they felt it was safe to land. We shot our limit of beautiful drake woodies both hunts. An amazing hunt in the most picture-perfect setting I could imagine. The only downfall was it was difficult to retrieve the birds without a dog or boat (not to mention the fact that I was the sole retriever because my hunting partner has a bad knee). We were fortunate however because we landed every bird shot.

that's fantastic - love little holes like that, don't you?!!

this is going to sound corny, but it works.

probably dating myself, but do you recall the "pocket fisherman" it was this little folding fishing pole that folds up to be no longer than about 12" and maybe 5" at widest point.

no dog, no boat? wade out as far as you can and fish for your bird with a zara spook! just hold on!! might just be a nice musky in there as well!! :yikes: :fish2:

would do a similar thing to retrieve dekes. grab your closest deke and using the lead strip weight, just make a "j" hook and rodeo throw the line across and in front of the deeper dekes. pull them on in.

Sounds like a great hunt, those little woody holes are fun! I have a couple behind my inlaws that have about 80 and 150 woodies on each right now. :D Plan on taking my 4 year old out there on some hunts.
