What?I never heard of such a thing.Sounds like he was just jealous because he was working and you were out having fun. What were you supposed to do put it in the vehicle with you.Sounds like harassment to me.The police sure could give out alot of tickets if this was a true law...So what was the outcome?Did he ticket you?If so I would dying to get in court to fight that one......

Sounds to me like you have a suit againgst the city. This is a form of hunter harrasment and you should follow through with a complaint and see a lawyer.
perhaps there is a local ordinance that you are unaware of...if not this cop was WAY out of line.

a. he/she was either jealous
b.ordinance against displaying animals
c.officer was out of line for pulling you over. I as an officer do not/and can't pull people over because something is offensive. If I could I would be way toooooo busy

I thought the law states that a deer must be displayed while in transport.

You have a written warning. That is great! Now you need to follow up on this to find out why this jerk was after you.
Though I am usually against this sort of thing, here I totally agree with FixedBlade and I definitely would pursue this on hunter harrassment.
Good luck, but keep smiling too!

I thought deer had to be in plain sight, I think it is worded in the hunting guide that the animals head had has to be "conspicuous", so officers can easily see what you have.
Congrats on the ten and where are the pics ?

Papagoose, I've been thinking about that little fiasco and it might even be a great idea to get ahold of a news reporter or two....newspaper and/or TV. They seem to love wierd things, so they probably would be interested.

CODE OF ORDINANCES
CANTON CHARTER TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN
http://librarytest.municode.com/mcc/home.htm?infobase=13379&doc_method=cleardoc
My feelings in maters such these is to keep a low profile. Many don't like the site of dead animals being displayed in plain view. Many people sit on the fence as far as hunting issues are concerned. No need to make more enemies.

I've done work with Amy Lang from Fox2 before on computer network security, maybe she might be interested in this. Let me know if you want her contact information.

Me either. I did a few different searches with deer and vehicle in them and came up with nothing. If it were me I'd take the written warning right to city hall and ask to be shown the ordinance. (If one exists) If it doesn't, I'd be contacting a lawyer and going after the officer for harrassment.

It's too bad it happened and sounded like it was his only reason to pull you over. BUT, a law suit or anything else isn't really necesary imo. That's what's wrong w/ the good ol USA. Someone does something wrong or something you think isn't correct and it's time to sue. That's crap.

I don't want this to turn in to another police bashing thread. But if the officer is pulling people over and hassling them for doing something that's perfectly LEGAL has has to be stopped.

I'm from canton, and the cops there are a little weird to begin with because canton wants to be seen as crime free. I have a friend who used to work with them and he told me all sorts of weird rules that they had. I'd go to township hall and ask to see the ordinance. When they can't produce it (which they can't because my family and others have driven through with deer since the 80s, and there is a big deer processing place in south canton that lots people go to) then id file a complaint, not a lawsuit

This is the email address of Canton public safty publicsafetyadmin@canton-mi.org (publicsafetyadmin@canton-mi.org) There website is http://www.canton-mi.org/publicsafety/contact.asp
Perhaps a few emails from us hunters asking specific questions and clarifications about the law in that city might help to clear this whole thing up.;)

Does that mean I also can't expose a big slab of ribs that I just purchased from the grocery store? Or walk down the road carrying a stringer of Fish that I just caught?
Tell them Canton cops to sit on the side of I-275 (and Ford Rd.) during the firearm deer season, they should be able to fill their quota that week.

chain of command first! file a formal complaint with the dept first and then ask to be shown the city regs on this! and follow up on it! there isnt much ground there for a lawsuit! but at least file a complaint first and talk to his/her shift commander lt. whatever and press the issue and show them the state rules on transporting the animal. and then ask for a written apolgy from the officer
I have to Agree this is the best route to go.

Good thing that Canton A****** did not decide to take a club to him for "illegally" transporting this carcass through his city. I once had a run in with a nasty person that worked in my kids pediatrician office. I sent a letter to the head of the corporation, and then I sent a copy of that letter to the Office Manager, The Pediatrician and a few others in charge. I recieved a phone call and a written apology in a week. I see your point Deputy on following the chain of command, but that is what I do if I have a complaint at work. Since he does not work for the police department, he does not need to follow the chain. If It were me and I was pissed off enough I would send a letter to the Chief of police, Shift commander, Mayors office and probaly the local paper. Stir up the nest of bees and you would be suprised at what would happen!!!!!

even if canton had such an ordinance, seems that it would run contrary to state law. Hope you follow up with them, really would like to hear there answer. by the way, congrats on your deer.

call Fred the practical lawyer  I would display everything I killed as I passed through town, squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, ducks, geese.....ect they'd all be tied to the roof of my buick...lol we had a CO like him while ice fishing, used to check our fishing licenses 3,4 times a day. finally after a week of this happening, we got tired of it...we duct-taped our licences up-side-down into our back-tag holders. when he asked to see them, we'd reply "It's on our back you can see it if you want." he quit checking us that frequently.

As a Police officer for 27 years, I have never heard of anybody stopping someone for tying a deer to the top of their vehicle. I can see the stop being made if the deer itself is impairing the drivers view or if the deer is not securely tied on and might be falling off the vehicle, but to stop somebody for simply having the deer on the car is unheard of by me. It is my opinion that you ask to speak to this Officers supervisor and respectfully question this Officers actions. If he or she claims that the Officers actions were correct, ask to see the law or ordinance. Then let the rest of us know. Its Officers like this one that give all the rest of us a bad name. Don't just walk away from this one. He or she needs to be stopped if she is using her authority to enforce her personal beliefs. Congrats on the buck.

Someone said this shouldn't turn into a cop bashing, I agree. Sometimes someone is wrong, sometimes someone else doesn't listen. Sometimes the whole story isn't told. What should be done is contact the officer's supervisor and continue from there if not satisfied. I fail to see any type of "hunter" harassment. Of course it's obvious from the thread and as someone else stated we are a sue happy society anymore, that's sad. Sue when really need but over this topic, whatever but I sure wouldn't be wasting my money.
How much does anyone what to bet though that the final outcome is never posted, they never are, it's just a bashing thread, again. ;)

Boehr, yours is a good post to end this one on. I think it's best to close this. If there is any new info on the resolution of this incident, then another new thread is fine. Closed.
