While hanging a tree stand yesterday, I found a coyote den on the side of a ravine with fresh tracks.
Three questions:
1. Do they use the den for rearing pups only?
2. If I am deer hunting in the area, will they relocate the den?
3. Knowing where the den is, what kind of winter time strategy would you use?
I plan on going after them after deer season...
They typically do not use dens this time of year but will during the winter months for shelter and pups in the spring. If you see tracks it may just be a yote checking the den for critters to eat, it does not mean it is actively using it. Fox, woodchucks, possum, coon and badgers will all use dens and this is a source of food for coyotes. (Alright maybe not the badgers).
I would rely on tracks leading up to a den much more in the winter and spring.

Thought I had it made finding that den.
I find it hard to believe those critters prefer to sleep in the weather instead of in a nice warm den...

This past Saturday I found my first coyote den. There are tracks large and small going in and coming out of it. This is fresh scat at the enterance too. Man, there are tracks all over the 2-tracks where I'm deer hunting in the same area. Weither or not is actually being used of not I'm not for certain, but I know if I set some traps there my odds of capturing a coyote will increase. If I get a deer out there I hope to find it right a way. I'm afraid there wouldn't be anything left, if for some reason I'd have to wait untill the next day!
