Im curious about coyote hunting so I'd like to hear from those of you who hunt coyote! Tell me anything and everything!

I bow hunt a lot in Oakland County and in recent years Ive had a few encounters with some coyotes. Just tonight 2 of them came through offering a great encounter.

The questions?

1) I just read in the Michigan hunting guide, page 33, line 6, that with my small game license I could have taken one. Is this correct?

2) What is the limit on coyotes?

3) Why would you hunt them? Im sure you dont eat them?

4) What do you do with the pelt? Sell it? To whom?

5) Bow? Shot Gun? Rifle?

Ok, who wants to know the location of these animals so they can go hunt them? I will tell you its in the Proud Lake Recreation Area and if any one wants to go after them email me for more information.

Its not like I need another hobbie  but I am curious. Thanks much to everyone for the feedback!

I am just starting to get into coyote hunting. I was hoping someone answered your questions because I am equally curious. As far as I can tell, there isn't a limit on coyote. The numbers are out of control, and the DNR wants them taken out. They have even started showing up in cities. That would be your reason for hunting them. To control the population. You don't eat them, or use the pelt. Sure, some have mounted them, and made rugs, but other than that, they aren't really good for anything. You can hunt them with bows, rifles, (22mags to large calibers)even trap them. What I want to do, is call one in with a rabbit bawl. If you simulate a wounded rabbit, they will come running in to investigate. Sounds cool. I need another hunting season anyway!!! What else are you going to do in the winter? Just drive your wife nuts!!

While the pelt may not be worth much in money, I checked some out at last years Deer and Turkey expo, and they are a very nice fur. I would not be ashamed to save up enough to have a coat made for my wife. The fur is very very nice to the touch too. They are varying shades and in deep winter some are white.

I too, am looking for all the info anyone will share.

Try these two sites. Better to try to educate yourself, than to wait for somebody to educate you. There's lots of info here.

#1. Small game lic. is all that needed to take Coyotes.
#2. No Limit, Kill all you can..
#3. Sport for the most part.. If you want to try eating one let me know how they tast :D
#4 You can sell them, not much of a market the past few years.. Send the hides in to be tanned, they do make very nice decorations if it's a clean Yote.
#5 hunt them with what every you want,,.

I just moved back here after ten years in Wyoming and can't believe how many coyotes are around here. I killed a LOT of them in Wyoming but have to think I may do almost as well here. All of the dogs I have killed so far have been VERY mangey though . Hope to start getting some in better shape so I can sell some of them I was told by a friend that there is a guy locally that will pay $40.00 each for the whole dog. You don't have to skin it. If I ever get one worth selling I will find out if that is true or not.

I thought about not responding at all since I have only hunted dogs for 2 years, and have yet to pull the trigger. In most instances, I like to do the calling (armed with a 12 ga 1187 stuffed with #4 buck) while someone else is the "shooter" (with either a shotgun or .22 depending on terrain). I have been able to call dogs within 20 -30 yards using a rabbitt distress call. Last year I started fooling around with a mouse squeaker coupled with a howler that you can make a variety of sounds on and it tended to get more responses (yips/howls) from other coyotes. I haven't quite figured out what dog call to use at what times. (Too bad it's not as easy as Turkey calling). Anyways, I prefer to hunt in Dec/Jan/Feb at night starting the day before to several days after the full moon. I only spend about an hour at each spot so you need 2-3 spots that you can hunt. Pay attention to the wind. Since I need to get up and go to work the next day, I'm normally home by midnight. Since I wanted to keep it inexpensive, I've elected to go with all mouth calls instead of the legal electronic versions. Plus I like fooling around with calls anyways. I have heard that some folks like 00 buck for the added range. Individuals going with #4 just have to limit their shot selection. It can be very exciting when they come in except when they sit down 15 yards to your right and your a right handed shot:(
