I have one of those cheapie 4 or 5 pin connectors and found that I have to replace them every two years or so. The inards get all corroaded over the winter form all the slush mixed with road salt gets past the cap and messes it all up. I bought a littel gizmo that plugs into the female end like the trailer and it has lights for all the connections, so when you put a blinker on, the blinker connection light blinks, etc. It cost $4-5, then you can figure out whether you need to replace the plug in.

I might try cleaning the contacts then applying a thin coat of di-electric grease.

Is it a four conductor flat plug? If so clean it with Electrmotive spray cleaner. Brake cleaner will work in a pinch. Get a small probe such as a small flat screwdriver and clean all the corrosion out of the female sides. Sometimes squeezing the plugs after it is put together with a pair of pliers will tighten the connection, but if thats required it is generally time for a new plug.
