I own a 93 evanrude 25 horse outboard. And I noticed some oil leaking out from around the prop.
I called Vans in grand rapids and they said it would be a good idea to have them do the job as apposed to myself, they quoted me a price of $150 to $200 to replace two seals in the lower unit.
Now I`m not familar with the workings of a lower unit but I am somewhat mechanically inclined.
Is this something I can do myself ?
Thank you all in advance.

can't tell you about a 25 horse, but I had mine replaced in an 85HP Evinrude last year by a guy that works at a marine repair shop. I had stopped in and told him what was going on and I think he said it was going to run somewhere in that $150 to 200 range. I asked if he did any 'after-hours' work and he told me he'd come over and do it that night for $70 including parts. He had some tools that I didn't even recognize and while watching him do the job I was thankful I didn't try taking it on. It was well worth the $70 but I woulda been choking on $200. I don't think it took him more than 30 minutes, but he obviously knew his stuff.

I had my 85 redone completely by a guy who works out of his home and it came out just fine. His work is reasonable and he has more than enough experience to do it right. Let me know if you are intereted in his info...

Are you sure it isn't gas and oil coming from the exhaust? If it's the prop seals, pretty easy to do and shouldn't be more than $20 if done on your own.

Thanks to all for the response.
Wecker 20......It is definitly just oil, I can`t smell any gas.
Have you done this type of repair before?

Yeah, twice on a 97 200 Venom. Find out where the leak is coming from. Check your lower unit oil, if it looks like a milkshake or if you pull the bottom plug and water comes out, you've confirmed a bad seal in the lu and don't run it. If it's a prop seal, we can walk you through the process.

For anyone that has a Johnson/Rude, here is a helpful link.Lots of info (http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/Accessories/Introduction.htm)
For prints click on Engine diagrams, select products, and so on. Has prints for electrical, lower unit, engine....and has part numbers for everything. Helps me a lot when I order parts cause I don't always trust the guy over the counter.

Thanks wecker 20.
Right now all I can tell you is that its leaking pure oil from around the prop.
So I can only assume it`s a seal behind the prop.
I`ll look into it closer tomarrow afternoon.
Right now I`m going to take a nap, I`m still tired from fishing and joining in on the river watch up in manistie.
